The Big Scoop Series #20: Making the Best Out of a Difficult Situation
A new year is beginning and, as the tradition goes, it is the time of the year we take stock of what happened in the last 12 months and try to figure out what's ahead of us. Well I do not intend to make a long review since that's what these compilations do year-long. There is just one impression that I'd like to share with you. Have you noticed that there are more and more women taking an active role in changing the world for the better?... Like Annie Leonard with her amazing short movie The Story of Stuff (which you should really watch if you never did), or Naomi Wolf in the The End of America, Sibel Edmonds one of the most courageous humans on Earth (watch her interview at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cm-uRQmfUU and at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUdT1UIDN80 - watch the 3 others parts as well - MUCH MORE on her below), or Jane Goodall amongst so many others. Of course, this is in no way a new trend, but I've got the feeling that a very significant part of the really life-changing positive efforts on Earth today are the results of women taking a stand and courageously spelling out the truth. Their life-caring, compassionate attitude, now emulated by an increasing number of men, is what may in the end make the difference for humanity and its cradle of Life: Earth. 2008 should therefore be the year to celebrate all courageous women who dared boldly go where few men ever went in their Love-driven efforts to save our world from millennia of men's ego-driven wars and abuse of humanity and our planet.
I would love to expound on a number of other issues but there is already so much for you to ponder in this compilation that I'll leave it at that and trust you will piece together the true picture of what matters and what can be done for the highest good of all.
P.S. Your feedback is as always welcomed and may be included in a coming compilation - unless you prefer it is not. "Dear soul Jean, this is Matthew greeting you and your readers. I wish to say only a few words about the thought forms that each of you creates by the intensity of your focus on any situation. Being truthfully informed is wise, but do not let your knowledge pull you into the energy of events that are ending third density's darkness. An investment of emotions and intense thoughts about those events keeps their momentum going, just as the energy of your emotions and thoughts about what you want in your world adds momentum to the light that is ushering in a glorious era on Earth. Stay steadfast in the light-love that is most powerful force in the cosmos, knowing that countless souls in spirit and in body soon will be rejoicing with you because your most radiant visions have become the reality that you were born to create."
Bill Moyers talks with Congressman Dennis Kucinich (January 04, 2008) http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/01042008/watch3.html
BILL MOYERS: There's a big Democratic debate Saturday night in New Hampshire. Are you in that ABC debate? DENNIS KUCINICH: No, I'm not. And there again, you know, when you look at all the polls on the Internet I'm winning a number of them. I won a number of straw polls. In post debate analysis out of debates I have been in-- BILL MOYERS: Yeah, that August 22nd debate on ABC when they did their post debate survey you beat everybody. Obama by 5,000 or 6,000 votes. Clinton by 9,000 votes. And yet the mainstream media paid no attention to it, right? DENNIS KUCINICH: Right. And I think that what's noteworthy is I think we have two cultures here. One which is the emerging culture of information technology that's Internet-based. And the other one is the more conventional TV technology which is coming to a clash. And I think they reflect some political trends in this country that maybe aren't getting too much attention. But they are going to have an impact. BILL MOYERS: What rationale did ABC give you for not including you in Saturday night's debate? DENNIS KUCINICH: Whatever their criteria was, they have no right to make the decision for the people of New Hampshire prior to the election being held. They have no right. As licensees, you know, the airwaves belong to the public, lest we forget. They don't belong to ABC. Disney, which owns ABC, has had executives contributing to some of the candidates in this race. It's a very serious matter here. CLIP

Shocking News on Japan's Whale Hunt http://go.care2.com/e/XGIe/slnc/teqj
Humpback whales in the Southern Ocean are safe from Japan's annual hunt, at least for this year. But over the next three months, Japan plans to kill 935 minke whales and 50 endangered fin whales! Japan must follow through on its commitment to not target humpback whales, and stop the senseless killing of other whale species! Sign the petition today "This is happy news for 50 humpback whales but Japan's whaling continues to expand," said Patrick Ramage, IFAW Global Whale Program Manager. Japan has killed more than 10,000 whales for "scientific research purposes" since 1986. However, little science has been produced, while the whale meat is sold in supermarkets and restaurants. Take action! Thank you for taking action to protect these beautiful and intelligent creatures from the Japanese whaling fleet.
Tens of millions of birds disappearing across North America (Dec 28, 2007) (14 minutes video) VERY SAD! http://rawstory.com/rawreplay/?p=372
CBC's The National reports that tens of millions of birds are disappearing across North America. NOTE: Industrial monoculture farming, pesticide and changes in the boreal forest, habitat destruction, urban sprawl are to blame as well as domestic cats as mentioned in the following comments excerpted from this URL above: "A single domestic cat can kill up to 3000 wild animals with over half of them being songbirds. Lets say only 1/3 of cats are hunters and 1/3 of the wild animals are wild birds. Do the math! It calculates out to billions of wild birds eaten or killed annually by domestic and feral cats. The problem could be solved overnight but they would never initiate a program to alleviate the problem. There is more money to be made in having the problem than in fixing it." -- "Chemtrails, pesticides, fertilizers and of course, ELF ..the nastiest of all. Thousands of birds dropped from the skies near the Kuwait/Iraq Border for no apparent reason. There is a war being waged on all living things on this planet." -- "The SOUTHEASTERN QUAIL STUDY COMMITTEE determined that in addition to farmers clear cutting and using pesticides that kill all of the yummy insects that nesting quail need to feed their young, fragmented habitat forces birds to cross highways for water and cover, and there are too many predators contributing to the plummeting quail populations.Motion detector-activated cameras also showed that skunks and free roaming house cats attack nests in shocking numbers. These coupled with too many avian and other mammalian predators have doomed the Prince Of Game Birds, The Bobwhite Quail. FOOD, WATER, COVER, SPACE and ARRANGEMENT. Remove any of these and animals are in trouble."
Vanishing wild bees will sting ecosystem (Dec 29, 2007) http://www.thestar.com/News/article/289362
(...) In the last two or three years they have been disappearing by the hundreds of millions. In addition, up to 90 per cent of wild bees have disappeared. No one knows exactly why. There are many single-cause theories for their disappearance: They are being killed by pesticides, by viral diseases carried by mites, by fungi, by electromagnetic radiation, by genetically modified plants, by so many medicinal antidotes that their immune systems are compromised, by sterile pollen, by stress. However, in a provocative paper delivered in New Orleans in October, professor Peter Harries-Jones of York University in Toronto called on scientists to broaden their perspectives. Start looking at behaviour in ecosystems instead of searching for a single cause-and-effect culprit, he urged. Prominent among the impacts experienced by bees, but not adequately studied, is global warming, he said, pointing out that in Baltimore, pollen and nectar are produced almost a month earlier than they were in the 1970s. This, for bees, has been a life-altering change. (...) In the view of Harries-Jones, bees are offering a wake-up call to the possibility that global warming could unravel networks and lead to ecosystem collapse much sooner than collapse would occur because of drought or flooding, or some of its other physical effects. Asia Society's multimedia look at electronic waste shipped overseas and the toxic effect it has on places such as Guiyu, China--known as "trash town." With an interview with Michael Zhao of the Center on US-China Relations at Asia Society. It's now had over a quarter million views. The REAL answer is to insist on local legislation that says these things cannot be shipped out of the place that they are BOUGHT. Ontario is the only province in Canada with no legislation on edumping, btw. Very convenient for the Dalton (and Gordon) McGuinty folks who have NO ANSWERS on dumping of any kind - they make stacks of money off it, using aboriginal lands to do it."

Correspondent Bob Simon tells a miraculous story of survival. When the great tsunami hit on December 26, 2004, millions of people were unprepared and paid a devastating price. This is the story of the sea gypsies who live off the coast of Thailand and Burma. Of all the peoples of the world, they are among the least touched by modern civilization. Amazingly, they survived the tsunami because they knew it was coming. The legend of the seven wave is also mentioned.

Save Bialowieza Forest, Europe's Last Primeval Temperate Forest (January 6, 2008) http://www.ecoearth.info/alerts/send.asp?id=poland
Demand the Polish government stop exploitation of the ancient Bialowieza forest, preserve the whole complex as a national park, and end permanently extensive logging that threatens Europe's last remnant old-growth northern temperate forests Situated on the Polish/Belarussian border, the Bialowieza Forest is a priceless relic of lowland European forests, a place where the last fragments of primeval temperate old-growth forest on the Central European lowland have survived. It is home to many species extinct elsewhere including the European Bison, the largest terrestrial mammal of Europe; and also contains lynx, wolves and other threatened wildlife and plants. Yet approximately 90% of the forest remains unprotected... For many years environmental NGOs, scientists, concerned citizens in Poland and abroad have asked successive Polish governments to protect the forest, asking them to ban cutting of old growth and for enlargement of the Bialowieza National Park to protect the whole forest complex. Until now there has been little success. After the autumn elections Poland has a new government, so we are trying anew. Please help influence Polish politicians by sending the protest email below. After doing so please note the exciting update on our New York City rainforest timber campaign. TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.ecoearth.info/alerts/send.asp?id=poland
5th WSF World Spirit Forum - January 20th-23rd 2008 in Arosa, Switzerland - (X)change Consciousness http://www.worldspiritforum.org/en/index.php
What is the WSF World Spirit Forum? We host the WSF World Spirit Forum with the intention of having spiritual and religious and political and social activists gather and develop the plan for a unified humanity with equity and solutions for global concerns. We gather to network and learn about the work of others in making for a more sustainable, equitable planet. There is a building momentum as people meet and dialogue about projects and initiatives that are helping to enhance the lives of all on the planet. In many ways the WSF World Spirit Forum is part of an emerging evolutionary revolution of consciousness. In its global scope it is a parallel event to the WEF World Economic Forum that is held at nearby Davos at about the same time. Still, being an independent organization - legally and in its philosophy, the WSF is bound to influence the thinking and decision making of political and economic leaders at the WEF and elsewhere towards driving this revolution of consciousness. -- Vision/Mission WSF World Spirit Forum - Check the pictures on those who were there last year through http://www.worldspiritforum.org/pics2006/wsf2006_pics.htm

Friday, January 11, 2008: The 6 year anniversary of the first prisoners being brought to Guantánamo.Last year on January 11th, after 500 people processed from the Supreme Court to the Federal court, 150 people risked arrest on behalf of the men in Guantanamo, with 88 being arrested inside the Federal Court in DC. Many of those arrested withheld their identification and took the names of men at Guantanamo. It was a very powerful day, made possible by the contributions of many in the extended Catholic Worker family. This year, we again are working with many groups on a demonstration in Washington, D.C. The day will begin with a rally at the National Mall co-sponsored with Amnesty International and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture followed by a prisoner procession to the Supreme Court. Endorsed by the American Civil Liberties Union, Bill of Rights Defense Committee, CodePink, International Federation for Human Rights, Network of Spiritual Progressives, Peace Action, School of the Americas Watch, Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition International, United for Peace and Justice, War Resisters League, and other groups. Who flew the 9/11 planes? Who controlled the pilots? Where did they come from? One of the biggest & still little-known secrets of 9/11 is the actual identities & affiliations of the 9/11 pilots. Thanks to Daniel Hopsicker, it's a secret no more: Three of the four terrorist pilots learned to fly in tiny Venice, Florida, a sleepy retirement community with the second oldest population of any city in the entire United States... They attended flight schools owned by two Dutch nationals, one of whom has Mob ties. Did 19 Arab terrorists from desert Kingdoms roam around in Florida as if they'd been listening to Tom Petty albums all their lives all by themselves? Or were they being trained here in a still-secret covert intelligence operation that somehow went horribly wrong?"Mohamed Atta & the Venice Flying Circus" details our search for the answers to these questions..and more.

China to Mass Produce Magnetic Levitation Wind Generators (November 7 , 07) http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news11.7c.html
Construction began on the world's largest production base for magnetic levitation (maglev) wind power generators in central China on Monday. The Guangzhou-based Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology Co. Ltd. invested 400 million yuan in building the base for the generators, from which it expects a yearly revenue of 1.6 billion yuan. The base will produce a series of maglev wind power generators with capacities ranging from 400 to 5,000 watts in the first half of 2008, said a company statement. The maglev generator co-developed by the company and Guangzhou Energy Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences is expected to create new opportunities for harnessing wind power in low-wind-speed areas, as it can utilize winds with starting speeds as low as 1.5 meters per second. The problem of the traditional wind turbines was that they require high wind speeds to start, because of the friction caused by their bearings, said Li Guokun, chief scientific developer of the new technology. The frictionless maglev generator would cut the operational expenses of wind farms by up to half, keeping the overall cost of wind power under 0.4 yuan per kilowatt-hour, said Li. Since it was unveiled at the Wind Power Asia Exhibition 2006 in Beijing, the technology has garnered interest in a dozen Chinese cities and more than 50 countries and regions in the world. The Zhongke company said the generator could be used on islands, in observatories, and television transfer stations, and even provide roadside lighting along highways by utilizing the airflow generated from passing vehicles. (One U.S. dollar equals 7.5 yuan).
Scientists Develop Method for Scrubbing Atmosphere of CO2 (November 8 , 07) http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news11.8a.html
Taking a page from Nature herself, a team of researchers developed a method to enhance removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and place it in the Earth's oceans for storage.Unlike other proposed ocean sequestration processes, the new technology does not make the oceans more acid and may be beneficial to coral reefs. The process is a manipulation of the natural weathering of volcanic silicate rocks.Reporting in Environmental Science and Technology, the Harvard and Penn State team explained their method."The technology involves selectively removing acid from the ocean in a way that might enable us to turn back the clock on global warming," says Kurt Zenz House, graduate student in Earth and planetary sciences, Harvard University. "Essentially, our technology dramatically accelerates a cleaning process that Nature herself uses for greenhouse gas accumulation." (...) According to House, this would allow removal of excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in a matter of decades rather than millennia.Besides removing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, this technique would counteract the continuing acidification of the oceans that threatens coral reefs and their biological communities. The technique is adaptable to operation in remote areas on geothermal or natural gas and is global rather than local. Unlike carbon dioxide scrubbers on power plants, the process can as easily remove naturally generated carbon dioxide as that produced from burning fossil fuel for power. CLIP
Terabyte Storage for Cell Phones (October 31, 2007) http://www.technologyreview.com/Nanotech/19643/
A nanotech-enabled device could replace the flash memory used in portable electronics. - A new type of memory technology could lead to thumb drives or digital-camera memory cards that store a terabyte of information--more than most hard drives hold today. The first examples of the new technology, which could also slash energy consumption by more than 99 percent, could be on the market within 18 months."It's a radically new technology," says Michael Kozicki, a professor of electrical engineering at the Arizona State University, whose group is one of several working on a version of the new memory. "If it really works as well as everybody thinks it could, it could genuinely revolutionize the memory and storage industry." CLIP
Inflatable Solar Produces Power For 25 times Less (October 23 , 07) http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news-inflatable-solar.html
There is an amazing new technology that promises much cheaper solar energy and its not hedged on future technology or unresolved production issues. The technology is Inflatable Solar Concentration, it exists today and is being developed by a company called Cool Earth and the name is fitting because this technology is nothing short of cool. The concept of Inflatable Solar is born out of the need to save the planet from energy conflict and environmental damage and Nobel prize winning scientists from around the World are gathered to make it happen. The goal is to reduce the cost of Solar by an incredible 25x in 3 years from $5.00 per watt to about 20¢, and theyre well on their way to doing so. Inflatable Solar works by concentrating light and focusing it onto photovoltaic cells, increasing the energy impacting the cells many times over. The design costs (400x less) per collected area than conventional mirrors and yet is so stable that it can withstand 130 mile an hour winds. The 2 meter wide bubble design also has the advantage of protecting the delicate mirror surfaces from rain, insects and dirt. Each in a series of concentrators are suspended on support cables that also control movement of the collectors. A grid of poles suspend the system high in the air making for usable land under the grid for farming ranching or other purposes. The idea is thought to have greater potential than wind energy which is limited by its material cost and relative smaller area of possible installation. The system is patent pending and it makes a lot of sense even for people without a great deal of knowledge in alternative energy. With the price of oil soaring to $90 a barrel and not so appealing prospects of increased Coal and Nuclear Power use, thinking out side of the box may be the best answer and it looks like the people at Cool Earth have found an Earth minimal and low cost solution to the problem of energy conversion.
Las Vegas to Build Worlds First 30 Story Vertical Farm (January 4, 2008) http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news-las-vegas-vertical-farm-1.2b.html
Las Vegas the tourist mecca of the World is set to begin development of the Worlds first vertical farm. The $200 million dollar project is designed to be a functional and profitable working farm growing enough food to feed 72,000 people for a year and provide another tourist attraction to the city that does everything in a larger than life way. The World currently uses about 80% of the available farm land and 60% of the earths population lives near or in an urban environment so the logical choice for farming is to go up for land where the environment can be controlled and where distribution is local. Las Vegas is seen as the perfect location for this project by Nevada State officials who would like to demonstrate their sustainability and environmental awareness instead of projecting an image of waste and excess. Although the project initial cost is high at $200 million, with annual revenue of $25 million from produce and another $15 million from tourists the 30 story vertical farm would be about as profitable as a casino with operating expenses only being about $6 million a year. There would be about 100 different crops grown ranging from strawberries to lettuce even miniature banana trees could be grown from each floors specially controlled environment. The products would go straight to the casinos and hotel properties and be a very visible and desirable addition to the overall Las Vegas experience. Design details should be worked out in 2008 and the project could open its doors by the middle of 2010. - MANY more such eco-news through http://www.nextenergynews.com/ (Make sure to click on the "Next" button at the bottom!)
The Year in Energy (December 27, 2007) http://www.technologyreview.com/Energy/19981/
Advanced biofuels, more-efficient vehicles, and solar power top the most notable energy stories of 2007.
The Rise of BiofuelsCorn ethanol production has grown so fast, driving up corn prices and driving down the price of ethanol, that some producers are having trouble breaking even. But an energy bill signed into law last week that requires greater use of biofuels will provide new incentives for both production of biofuels and research into new technologies. Reaching the ambitious goals set by the law will require new technologies for transforming biomass into fuel. (See "Oil from Wood," "Breaking Ground on Cellulosic Ethanol," and "BP's Bet on Butanol.") Others are developing ways to convert biomass into hydrocarbon fuels that could be more practical than ethanol. (See "Making Gasoline from Bacteria.") In the current print issue, Technology Review's editor takes a close look at the technology needed to replace a significant part of gas consumption with renewable fuels and the costs of doing so. (See "The Price of Biofuels.") Cheaper solar panels - Investors are rushing to pour money into solar energy companies to capitalize on an industry that's growing by leaps and bounds. That brought good news for solar technology this year, as the wraps came off a number of technical advances that could eventually make energy from the sun as cheaply as conventional sources. These include new types of panels that use cheaper materials or cheaper manufacturing techniques. (See "Making Cheaper Solar Cells" and "Solar Power at Half the Cost.") One company in particular, San Jose-based Nanosolar, attracted attention for its decision to build an enormous manufacturing facility for making inexpensive thin-film solar panels (see "Large-scale, Cheap Solar Electricity"), only to see delays in production. But by the end of the year the company had started manufacturing solar panels for its first customer.Researchers are also investigating more distant possibilities for solar, including using the exotic physics of quantum dots and mimicking the complex chemistry of photosynthesis to help make solar power ubiquitous. (See "TR10: Nanocharging Solar" and "Supplying the World's Energy Needs with Light and Water.") CLIP

RON PAUL AWAKENS THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA (December 31, 2007) http://www.newswithviews.com/Stang/alan23.htm
I am still recovering from the response to my piece about the possible assassination of Dr. Ron Paul. In more than forty years of struggle in the battle for America, I have never seen anything like it. Days after publication, I am still trying to answer the email. It is coming from everywhere, in a swelling wave, and I literally mean everywhere, around the world. There are messages from across this country, of course, but also from Canada, from Sweden, from the Philippines, Australia and elsewhere. It is as if, blundering in the darkness, I accidentally pushed an unseen button, or uncorked an old bottle, or opened a long unused door, and that unknowing, unintended action has unleashed a dormant, primeval force, waiting to be summoned. From uncountable throats a roaring erupts. Something awesome awakens and arises, the dimensions of which we see dimly because they are so vast, something in the air. Excerpts from some of these messages could be helpful. First, they prove that what I told you is true. Some of them are scary. Second, they inspire; they prove that, as Dr. No says, freedom is contagious. People everywhere want it. Third, reading them will convince you that you are not alone and you are not crazy. College campuses, for instance, are aflame. We knew something was afoot when Dr. Paul discusses economics, the dismal science, the most boring subject, and students erupt in ecstasy. Consider that most of these comments do not come from some fringe. They come from the heart of the heartland, from what network degenerates contemptuously dismiss as flyover country. Here they are: CLIP - Ron Paul was on Jay Leno this Monday evening!
Why I Believe Bush Must Go - By George McGovern (January 6, 2008) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/04/AR2008010404308_pf.html
Nixon Was Bad. These Guys Are Worse. - As we enter the eighth year of the Bush-Cheney administration, I have belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment of the president and the vice president. After the 1972 presidential election, I stood clear of calls to impeach President Richard M. Nixon for his misconduct during the campaign. I thought that my joining the impeachment effort would be seen as an expression of personal vengeance toward the president who had defeated me.Today I have made a different choice.Of course, there seems to be little bipartisan support for impeachment. The political scene is marked by narrow and sometimes superficial partisanship, especially among Republicans, and a lack of courage and statesmanship on the part of too many Democratic politicians. So the chances of a bipartisan impeachment and conviction are not promising. But what are the facts?Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses. They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world. These are truly "high crimes and misdemeanors," to use the constitutional standard. From the beginning, the Bush-Cheney team's assumption of power was the product of questionable elections that probably should have been officially challenged -- perhaps even by a congressional investigation. In a more fundamental sense, American democracy has been derailed throughout the Bush-Cheney regime. The dominant commitment of the administration has been a murderous, illegal, nonsensical war against Iraq. That irresponsible venture has killed almost 4,000 Americans, left many times that number mentally or physically crippled, claimed the lives of an estimated 600,000 Iraqis (according to a careful October 2006 study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) and laid waste their country. The financial cost to the United States is now $250 million a day and is expected to exceed a total of $1 trillion, most of which we have borrowed from the Chinese and others as our national debt has now climbed above $9 trillion -- by far the highest in our national history. All of this has been done without the declaration of war from Congress that the Constitution clearly requires, in defiance of the U.N. Charter and in violation of international law. This reckless disregard for life and property, as well as constitutional law, has been accompanied by the abuse of prisoners, including systematic torture, in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions of 1949. In the Thrall of AIPAC - Why Obama Can't Save Us (01/05/08) http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19008.htm
(...) These are some of Obama's comments during a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC):"Our job is to rebuild the road to real peace and lasting security throughout the region, "Our job is to do more than lay out another road map.""That effort begins with a clear and strong commitment to the security of Israel: Our strongest ally in the region and its only established democracy. "That will always be my starting point."And calling for sustained military support to Israel, Obama said: "We must preserve our total commitment to our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense programs." For Barack Obama to say that "our job is to lay out another road map" for peace while we are providing military support to Israel as the country launches attacks on Palestinians is hypocrisy. There is more than a conflict of interest for the US to go to the table, act as peace brokers, and make demands. But, then, that is what we do as self-appointed police officers to the world. We decry the violence in Kenya. Condi Rice has just made a statement that it must stop. But the violence perpetrated on the Iraqi and Afghan populations by her boss's policies continues without end. Our violence is good violence. Anyone else's is barbaric. It matters little to me that Barack Obama says he was against invading Iraq. After all, he votes to continue funding it. If this presidential candidate wanted to mend relations with Muslims, he could start by voting against additional war funding. And he could say no to AIPAC-but this would be political suicide. CLIP
Dimona Reactor a Mystery Threatening Middle East http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/WO0309/S00228.htm
The Israeli nuclear reactor of Dimona is vulnerable to meltdown, like the Russian reactor of Chernobyl two decades ago, which caused a humanitarian and ecological catastrophe. If Dimona melts down, it would affect an area 500 aerial kilometers in radius, reaching Cyprus and the entire neighboring region, warned Dr. Yousef Abu Safiya, Head of the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority. (...) The Dimona reactor is considered to be the most mysterious secrets of the "nuclear world", as Israel categorically refused, since its establishment in 1948 and after building the reactor, any routine inspection that other reactors around the world goes through, which "forcibly" open their reactors' doors in fear of the American waving of the "club" of international resolutions. No Inspection Beyond this Point! Israel might be considered the only state that opposes to the inspection visits conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) all over the world, added to its rejection, until this very day, to sign the treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which was signed by all Arab states. For sale: Wests deadly nuclear secrets (January 6, 2008) http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article3137695.ece
A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets. Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, listened into hundreds of sensitive intercepted conversations while based at the agencys Washington field office. She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey. Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions. Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan. Nukes, Spooks, and the Specter of 9/11 (January 7, 2008) http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=12166
We're in big trouble if even half of what Sibel Edmonds says is true (...) The darkest secrets of 9/11 are buried at the end of the trail laid out in Edmonds' testimony. (...) Corruption and a massive cover-up organized at the highest levels of government America's nuclear secrets and technology looted on a massive scale, and sold to our enemies via a network set up by our alleged foreign "friends," while the threat of nuclear terrorism hangs over our country like a thick fog of fear, and warmongering politicians scare us into going along with the program if even half of what Edmonds alleges turns out to be true, then we are all in some very big trouble. In light of the Edmonds revelations, we have to reconsider the implications of the question Charles Gibson opened with during the ABC Democratic debate:"The day after a nuclear weapon goes off in an American city, what would we wish we had done to prevent it and what will we actually do on the day after?"Perhaps congressman Henry Waxman, who solemnly pledged to launch a public investigation into the allegations made by Edmonds, will wish he had kept his promise. Maybe even the national news media, which has been offered this story repeatedly, by Ms. Edmonds and her supporters, will wish they had covered it.Fortunately, we don't need the "mainstream" media to get the truth out to the American people. With the new technology of the computer age, we can do an end run around the media. This YouTube video is shocking: As Edmonds says, "we have the facts, we have the documents, we have the witnesses. Put out the tapes, put out the documents, put out the intercepts put out the truth."If a nuke ever goes off in an American city, it will probably have been stolen from our own arsenal once the American people wake up to that scary fact, the rest will follow automatically.
Sibel Edmonds fingers traitors Douglas Feith, Richard Perle
The darkest secrets of 9/11 are buried at the end of the trail laid out in Edmonds' testimony. As writes: The Times article then notes something that I reported 18 months ago. Immediately after 911, the FBI arrested a bunch of people suspected of being involved with the attacks-including four associates of key targets of FBI's counterintelligence operations. Sibel heard the targets tell Marc Grossman: 'We need to get them out of the U.S. because we can't afford for them to spill the beans.' Grossman duly facilitated their release from jail and the suspects immediately left the country without further investigation or interrogation. "Let me repeat that for emphasis: The #3 guy at the State Dept. facilitated the immediate release of 911 suspects at the request of targets of the FBI's investigation." Corruption and a massive cover-up organized at the highest levels of government—America's nuclear secrets and technology looted on a massive scale, and sold to our enemies via a network set up by our alleged foreign friends," while the threat of nuclear terrorism hangs over our country like a thick fog of fear, and warmongering politicians scare us into going along with the program—if even half of what Edmonds alleges turns out to be true, then we are all in some very big trouble.
Edmonds, 911 Coverup, Treason & The Bomb By Dave Lindorff (1-7-8) http://www.rense.com/general79/EDM.HTM
If a new article just published Saturday in the Times of London based upon information provided by US government whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, is correct, we have not only solid evidence of prior knowledge of 9-11 by high up US government officials, but evidence of treasonous activity by many of those same officials involving efforts to provide US nuclear secrets to America's enemies, even including Al Qaeda. The story also casts a chilling light on the so-called "accidental" flight of six nuclear-armed cruise missiles aboard an errant B-52 that flew last Aug. 30 from Minot AFB in North Dakota to Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Sunday Times reports that Edmonds, whose whistleblowing efforts have been studiously ignored by what passes for the news media in American news media, approached the Rupert Murdoch-owned British paper a month ago after reading a report there that an Al-Qaeda leader had been training some of the 9-11 hijackers at a base in Turkey, a US NATO alley, under the noses of the Turkish military. (...) An Air Force investigation into that incident, ordered by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, claimed improbably that the whole thing had been an "accident," but many veterans of the US Air Force and Navy with experience in handling nuclear weapons say that such an explanation is impossible, and argue that there had to have been a chain or orders from above the level of the base commander for such a flight to have occurred. Incredibly, almost five months after that bizarre incident (which included several as yet unexplained deaths of B-52 pilots and base personnel occurring in the weeks shortly before and after the flight), in which six 150-kiloton warheads went missing for 36 hours, there has been no Congressional investigation and no FBI investigation into what happened. Yet in view of Edmonds' story to the London Times, alleging that there has been an ongoing, active effort for some years by both Al Qaeda and by agents of two US allies, Turkey and Pakistan, to get US nuclear weapons secrets and even weapons, and that there are treasonous moles at work within the American government and nuclear bureaucracy aiding and abetting those efforts, surely at a minimum, a major public inquiry is called for. Meanwhile, there is enough in just this one London Times story to keep an army of investigative reporters busy for years. So why, one has to ask, is this story appearing in a highly respected British newspaper, but not anywhere in the corporate US media?
BBC Censored Benazir Bhutto's Reports that Bin Laden Had Been Murdered (Dec 30, 2007) http://existentialistcowboy.blogspot.com/2007/12/bbc-censored-benazir-bhuttos-reports.html
When a news organization as venerable as the BBC censors the reportage of a story as important as the assassination of Benzir Bhutto --a highly visible critic of Bush/British policy with regard to the "War on Terrorism" et al --it is fair to ask: who is the BBC protecting? Are they covering up the motive for her murder? Are they protecting the regimes that engineered her assassination? Here is the original, unedited version in which Bhutto states that Bin Laden had been murdered. Here is the BBC's Censored version. Bhutto herself has exposed a motive for her murder. Solving the case is a matter of finding the gunmen whom Hillary Clinton thinks may be found among Pakistani troops.
Sources: Bhutto was to give U.S. lawmakers vote-rigging report (January 2, 2008) http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/01/01/pakistan.voterigging/
LAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- On the day she died, Benazir Bhutto planned to hand over to visiting U.S. lawmakers a report accusing Pakistan's intelligence services of a plot to rig parliamentary elections, sources close to the slain former Pakistani prime minister told CNN Tuesday. Rep. Patrick Kennedy and Rep. Arlen Specter were scheduled to meet with Bhutto on the day she died. Bhutto was assassinated Thursday, hours before a scheduled meeting with Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-Rhode Island, and Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pennsylvania. A top Bhutto aide who helped write the report showed a copy to CNN. "Where an opposing candidate is strong in an area, they [supporters of President Pervez Musharraf ] have planned to create a conflict at the polling station, even killing people if necessary, to stop polls at least three to four hours," the document says. The report also accused the government of planning to tamper with ballots and voter lists, intimidate opposition candidates and misuse U.S.-made equipment to monitor communications of opponents. "Ninety percent of the equipment that the USA gave the government of Pakistan to fight terrorism is being used to monitor and to keep a check on their political opponents," the report says. (...) Sen. Latif Khosa, who helped put the report together, accused the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence of operating a rigging cell from a safe house in the capital, Islamabad. The goal, he said, is to change voting results electronically on election day. (JUST LIKE IN THE US!) "The ISI has set up a mega-computer system where they can hack any computer in Pakistan and connect with the Election Commission," he said. Media outlets in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh have run reports alleging that retired Brig. Gen. Ejaz Shah -- formerly an Inter-Services Intelligence officer and now head of the civilian Intelligence Bureau -- is involved in the vote rigging plans. CLIP
Renegade Commando Units Possibly Involved in Bhutto Killing http://counterterrorismblog.org/2007/12/renegade_commando_units_possib.php
The attack yesterday at Rawalpindi bore the hallmarks of a sophisticated military operation. At first, Bhutto's rally was hit by a suicide bomb that turned out to be a decoy. According to press reports and a situation report of the incident relayed to The New York Sun by an American intelligence officer, Bhutto's armored limousine was shot by multiple snipers whose armor-piercing bullets penetrated the vehicle, hitting the former premier five times in the head, chest, and neck. Two of the snipers then detonated themselves shortly after the shooting, according to the situation report, while being pursued by local police. A separate attack was thwarted at the local hospital where Bhutto possibly would have been revived had she survived the initial shooting. CLIP (Many more related news through this URL above)
Benazir shot by three sniper teams (January 03, 2008) http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1142837

They fired more than six times, which was followed by two simultaneous rocket-propelled grenades designed to destroy the scene of the assassination. The central media office of the Pakistan Peoples Party, led by Farhatullah Babar, has circulated a January 1 investigative story carried by Russia's only leading English language news service, WhatDoesItMean.com, and titled "Sniper teams kill Pakistan's Bhutto prior to meeting US lawmakers." Sniper Teams Kill Pakistan's Bhutto Prior To Meeting US Lawmakers (December 28, 2007) http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1060.htm
FSB reports presented to President Putin on the assassination of Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto today are detailing what Russian Security Analysts are stating was a 'sophisticated' sniper team attack which left the loved leader of her people dead. These reports state Pakistan's elite commando division, called the Special Service Group (SSG), and which is the elite special operations arm of the Pakistani Army, were 'most likely' to blame as they are the only organization capable of mounting an operation such as this in Pakistan. As to the actual assassination of Bhutto these reports state that she was fired upon by 'no less' than 3 separate sniper teams firing in excess of 6 times [India sources say 5] and which was then followed by 2 'simultaneous' rocket propelled grenades designed to destroy the scene of the assassination, but whose explosions could then be 'blamed' on a 'suicide bombing'.Russian Military Analysts are further reporting that the assassination of Bhutto, by Pakistan's Military Forces, was necessitated due to her imminent meeting with two top US Lawmakers, US Congressman Patrick Kennedy and US Senator Arlen Specter, who she was scheduled to meet following her last rally, and where she was prepared to give Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Specter 'evidence' that supported her claims that she was being targeted for death by Pakistan's US backed dictator Pervez Musharraf. It is important to note that Benazir Bhutto had previously stated to the US that she would only turn her evidence over to Congressman Kennedy and Senator Specter due to their involvement with the assassination of the American President John F. Kennedy in 1963 as Patrick Kennedy is a surviving family member and Arlen Specter was the chief investigator of the President's murder for the Warren Commission, the tribunal set up to investigate President Kennedy's killing. It was, state these reports, Bhutto's belief that only two such prominent lawmakers who knew the 'truth' behind the assassination of President Kennedy could properly handle the 'shocking' information she was prepared to present to them should she have lived but one more hour. Also, it is important to note that occurring during the same time frame as the plot and killing of Bhutto in Pakistan, its US ally began suffering a series of bizarre attacks against its War Leaders, and which included the United States Army Leader, Secretary Pete Geren, having his home in Texas targeted by a suicidal driver, and, also in Texas, the childhood home of President Bush, and which is on the property of his fathers Presidential Museum, being attacked by arsonists. These current events, and when coupled with the White House attack that left Vice President Cheney's offices in flames, and which we had previously reported on, point towards a growing destabilization of the current World Order due to the United States continued efforts to gain hegemony over the vital oil resources of the Middle East, but which these latest events may prove to be much harder now to accomplish. This is so, and as these reports make clear, the United States complicity with Pakistan to 'create and control' the very terrorist organizations they have used to mislead their peoples into giving up their freedoms and support a World War that is bankrupting the United States due to the truth that the truest enemies of the West are their very own leaders.
Bhutto was targeted by laser beam: Report (2 Jan 2008) http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/World/Pakistan/Bhutto_was_targeted_by_laser_beam_Report/articleshow/2668858.cms
ISLAMABAD: The controversy over former premier Benazir Bhutto's assassination has taken another turn with a section of her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) claiming she was targeted with sophisticated "laser beam technology". Bhutto's wounds were caused not by bullets but by some sort of laser weapon, The Nation newspaper said quoting sources in the PPP. When Bhutto was admitted to Rawalpindi General Hospital shortly after the fatal attack on her on December 27, doctor Musaddiq Khan, who treated her, told a PPP leader that he had seen "such a case for the first time in his life", sources said. Bhutto's wounds were not caused by bullets and she had died before reaching the hospital. A part of her brain and blood had spilled out from her head, they quoted the doctor as saying. The sources also claimed both the gunshots and the bomb blast in the attack on Bhutto "were a decoy to hide the real shooters". The paper further quoted the sources as saying that the militant leader Baitullah Mehsud and the Taliban, blamed for her assassination by the government, did not have such technology.

Death turns Benazir into a saintly star (3 Jan 2008) http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/World/Pakistan/Death_turns_Benazir_into_a_saintly_star/articleshow/2670503.cms
NEW DELHI: Mahesh Bhatt's announcement that he plans to make a film on the life and death of Benazir Bhutto will add to the aura of charismatic martyrdom that has already enshrouded the after-image of the 'Daughter of the East'. The international media, including those in India, have by and large eulogised the PPP leader as the lost great white (well, Oxbridge-educated, at least) hope of Pakistan and, indeed, the subcontinent as a whole, who gave her life for the twin causes of peace and democracy. The truth, as some nitpickers have pointed out, is rather less suffused with neon-lit nobility. A true daughter of her father, Zulfiqar, Benazir was a shrewd, manipulative politician, and no particular friend of India. Though she did not go as far as Bhutto père did by promising to administer a 'thousand cuts' to India, by her own admission she fuelled Khalistani separatism in Punjab, which she later eased up on only to foster insurgency in J&K. During her two spells as prime minister, the regime she presided over was so corrupt that her husband, Zardari, earned the nickname of 'Mr Five Per Cent', that allegedly being his cut on every major deal in the country. The same Zardari is currently keeping the seat warm for their son, Bilawal, as head of the PPP. Her assassination and the clumsy cover-up attempted by the Pakistani government immediately absolved her of all sins of omission and commission and elevated her to the status of sacrificial victim, a saintling if not quite a saint as yet. "Even those countries where we expected ongoing strong privacy protection, like Germany and Canada, are sinking into the mire.Although privacy was improving in the former communist states of eastern Europe, it is worsening across Western Europe, the report said. Concerns about terrorism, immigration and border security were driving the spread of identity and fingerprinting systems, according to the report.Greece, Romania and Canada had the best records of 47 countries Privacy International surveyed.Malaysia, Russia and China ranked worst, but Great Britain and the United States also fell into the lowest-performing group of "endemic surveillance societies."The survey considered such factors as legal protections, enforcement, data sharing, the use of biometrics and prevalence of closed-circuit cameras. The increase in incomes of the top 1 percent of Americans from 2003 to 2005 exceeded the total income of the poorest 20 percent of Americans, data in a new report by the Congressional Budget Office shows. The poorest fifth of households had total income of $383.4 billion in 2005, while just the increase in income for the top 1 percent came to $524.8 billion, a figure 37 percent higher. The total income of the top 1.1 million households was $1.8 trillion, or 18.1 percent of the total income of all Americans, up from 14.3 percent of all income in 2003. The total 2005 income of the three million individual Americans at the top was roughly equal to that of the bottom 166 million Americans, analysis of the report showed. Earlier reports, based on tax returns, showed that in 2005 the top 10 percent, top 1 percent and fractions of the top 1 percent enjoyed their greatest share of income since 1928 and 1929. Much of the increase at the top reflected the rebound of the stock market after its sharp drop in 2000, economists from across the political spectrum said. About half of the income going to the top 1 percent comes from investments and business. CLIP
Brazil Makes Worlds Biggest Oil Discovery in 30 Years (December 17, 07) http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news12.17d.html
Brazil's Petrobras has discovered the largest light crude Oil Field since the Mexican Cantarell Field in 1976. The massive find is in the same area off the coast of Brazil as the restly discovered Tupi field which is beleived to hold 8 billion barrels of extractable crude. The new Sugar Loaf Field discovery is 5 times larger than Tupi and could signal an end to declining oil production around the World.According to officials at Petrobras, Brazil's state-run oil and gas company, the Sugar Loaf field may produce up to 40 billion barrels of oil. Several multinational petroleum companies are already lining up to explore the region, including Petrobras, Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil. The basin is believed to contain light crude, an added bonus for Brazil considering it still depends on other countries to refine oil for its domestic needs."To discovery oil is one thing, but to discover light crude is a real commodity," said one analyst. Preliminary exploration of the area has determined that the Sugar Loaf field is five times the size of the Tupi field, already considered a major boon for South America's largest economy.Last month Petrobras officials said the discovery in the Tupi oil field could launch Brazil into the top 10 oil producers in the world. The oil field's potential yield would provide Brazil with the world's eighth-largest oil and gas reserves, Petrobras President Sergio Gabrielli said. CLIP
Nuke Industry Is on the Verge of Getting $25 Billion Handout (December 18, 2007) http://www.alternet.org/stories/70924/
Congress is about to dump billions on an industry that has been unprofitable for 50 years. -- The House is set to vote on Tuesday on the $500 billion 2008 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. Unveiled on Sunday, the measure covers budgets for all cabinet departments except the Pentagon. It's expected to pass both houses of Congress this week. Hidden in the bill is a major energy package that would boost government financing for the nuclear industry. It would provide loan guarantees of up to $25 billion for new nuclear reactors. A massive grassroots campaign forced these taxpayer-financed loans out of the national energy bill earlier this month, but last week Republican Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico slipped them back into the budget vote. Harvey Wasserman has been at the forefront of raising awareness about the dangers of nuclear power. He helped found the grassroots anti-nuke movement in the early 1970s, advises the Nuclear Information and Resource Service. He's senior editor of the Ohio-based freepress.org and editor of nukefree.org. Harvey Wasserman has also co-authored two books on the 2004 election. They are How the GOP Stole America's 2004 Election and Is Rigging 2008 and What Happened in Ohio: A Documentary Record of Theft and Fraud in the 2004 Election. Amy Goodman: Welcome to Democracy Now! ... Talk about this energy bill. Harvey Wasserman: Well, we beat Pete Domenici. With Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Keb' Mo', Ben Harper, we put out a music video on nukefree.org. We raised 120,000 signatures and presented them to Congress in October. And Domenici was forced to pull these nuke loan guarantees out of the energy bill, but then slipped them back into the appropriations bill. And the nuclear power industry is a fifty-year proven failure, and they can't get independent financing to build their own new reactors, which they want to do now. And so, they've gone to the government. This is one issue where we're in agreement with Forbes magazine and the Cato Institute, which is backing the opposition to these loan guarantees, because if nuclear power, after fifty years of huge government subsidies, can't make it in the marketplace, why should the taxpayers fund another $25 billion worth of reactor construction? We're on the brink of a tremendous energy revolution in solar, wind, tidal, geothermal. You know, we're looking almost at a solartopia of a renewable-based economy, which will be much more controllable at the grassroots, much more democratically oriented. And that's why the nuclear power industry is desperately holding on here. CLIP
Nature and man jointly cook Arctic (Jan 3, 2008) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080103/ap_on_sc/arctic_warming_8;_ylt=AutqLPUCwdhsYZi9wfkUXVBrAlMA
WASHINGTON - There's more to the recent dramatic and alarming thawing of the Arctic region than can be explained by man-made global warming alone, a new study found. Nature is pushing the Arctic to the edge, too. There's a natural cause that may account for much of the Arctic warming, which has melted sea ice, ice sheets and glaciers, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Nature. New research points a finger at a natural and cyclical increase in the amount of energy in the atmosphere that moves from south to north around the Arctic Circle. But that energy transfer, which comes with storms that head north because of ocean currents, is not acting alone either, scientists say. Another upcoming study concludes that the combination of both that natural energy transfer increase and man-made global warming serve as a one-two punch that is pushing the Arctic over the edge. Scientists are trying to figure out why the Arctic is warming and melting faster than computer models predict. The summer of 2007, like the summer of 2005, smashed all records for loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and ice sheet in Greenland. In September, the Arctic Ocean had 23 percent less sea ice than the previous record low. Greenland's ice sheet melted 19 billion tons more than its previous record. CLIP

Rising seas 'to beat predictions' (17 December 2007) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7148137.stm
The world's sea levels could rise twice as high this century as UN climate scientists have previously predicted, according to a study. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change proposes a maximum sea level rise of 81cm (32in) this century. But in the journal Nature Geoscience, researchers say the true maximum could be about twice that: 163cm (64in).They looked at what happened more than 100,000 years ago - the last time Earth was this warm. The results join other studies showing that current sea level projections may be very conservative. Sea level rise is a key effect of global climate change. There are two major contributory effects: expansion of sea water as the oceans warm, and the melting of ice over land. In the latest study, researchers came up with their estimates by looking at the so-called interglacial period, some 124,000 to 119,000 years ago, when Earth's climate was warmer than it is now due to a different configuration of the planet's orbit around the Sun. That was the last time sea levels reached up to 6m (20ft) above where they are now, fuelled by the melting of ice sheets that covered Greenland and Antarctica. CLIP

At least one type of damage apparently never heals. When the eye is exposed for a prolonged time to microwave radiation, there is large-scale damage to the optical quality of the lens. But there seemed to be a maximum level to this kind of damage, and when the exposure stops, the damage begins to heal. However, at the same time, a different kind of damage occurs at the microscopic level. Tiny "bubbles" appear on the surface of the lens. This kind of damage reaches no maximum level, but instead accumulates progressively, and it did not heal even after the experiment stopped. It was theorized that the bubbles were caused by friction between cells that were exposed to the radiation. Dr. Mercola's Comment: Electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from cell phones is a topic that provokes a good deal of controversy. Many experts believe that the radiation is too low-level to cause harm. However, they often base this on an examination of thermal or heat-related effects. The danger from cell phones is far more likely to originate in the low-intensity pulsed microwave radiation that the phones emit. There is a growing body of evidence that long-term exposure to this kind of cell phone radiation can indeed be a danger. As well as these studies showing they can affect the sensitive cells of your eyes, there has been research indicating that it can cause: Brain cancer; Tumor growth on the auditory nerve; Possibly Alzheimer's disease; Many other potential problems. A brain tumors' epidemic in Medellin (Dec 23, 2007) http://omega.twoday.net/stories/4557468/
(...) The Neurosurgery Department at San Vicente de Paul University Hospital (a fourth level complexity hospital) is alarmed because of the rocketing numbers of brain tumors in the city. Twenty years ago, Medellin could count 1 or 2 tumors (at the most) a year of the astrocytoma type. "Just in this clinic (Rosario clinic), I have had four this month, not counting the others that I have in different hospitals in the city", stated Dr. Cumplido. The valley where Medellin is located has around 650 cell phone masts according to city authorities and more than 3,000 microwave sources including cell phone telephony according to the National Ministry of Communications. The total population is around 1.5 million including all the metropolitan area. The mountains seem to concentrate the electromagnetic smog coming from cell phone masts and WiFi sources. Subject: Feedback Re: more on edumping, the ORIGINAL video
It was wonderful to hear from you.
We sorta had a "falling out" about Michael Mandeville awhile back, so I've just sort kept up my blogging and networking on my own.
That blog has an AMAZING amount of info; (in fact, both of them do, really) and it's aimed at the 18-30 year who has gotten a seriously deficient education!! It's on a google feed, which google provided without my asking, in fact! They/Google use my info constantly on various topics (Kurdistan, for one - that's a very high profile item for the ptb right now - as well as the radiation information. I also get q quite a bit of attention from them about the SPP/NAU, as I write about that consistently.)
You are most welcome to go through my site for links at any time. I have the smartest people who came OFF Mandeville's list as they grew fed up providing me with research for the past couple of years from lots of places around the planet. We are amazingly "up to speed", particularly on the upcoming economic issues which are floating, as yet, under the radar.
What I am ACTUALLY Asking you for at this point is this: for activists, getting involved in IMPEACHMENT is the real deal right now, returning to the Rule of Law and the underlying war crimes issue. The US (and Canada) play hard ball with the rest of the world to bully them with TORTURE and saber rattling to stay in control of all the resources to make profit$, not for the US or Canadian citizen to live a good life. The evidence behind this is SOLID.
The PTB have basically broken the bank (linda Moulton Howe's article in the last ERN is just the TIP of the iceberg and I have some GREAT stuff on upcoming Third Path solutions), and in the process have used the mainstream media to avoid looking at the war crimes being permitted.
I am working with: planetization.org, Daily Kos, Crooks&Liars, TPMmuckraker, Matt Janovic's J to the power of 7, and marc parent's AMAZING mparent7777-2.blogspot.com to further IMPEACHMENT and accumulating war crimes tribunal evidence. This is easy to see on my blog!!
Our basic problem, to my mind is at least three-fold; the MURKANS don't see the global nature of the problem and don't ask for global support, the antiwar people don't foster new leadership over the course of the disastrous BuZh years and the sexist nature of NOT advancing women's leadership, except as regards pretty oldstream organizations (like ILPF, etc.). It's still a cult of personality running things which tends to make it heirarchical! The same old talking heads time after time. I've been an activist for 40 years; I do have an idea of what I am talking about. I saw the same mistakes around the Vietnam war organizing.
Anyway, I am constantly being updated, and I wonder IF we could have a impeachment item where I could just give you some great urls, the underlying GLOBAL view on it all and the issues about what lawyers and their organizations are actually DOING, as this is a pretty amazing story, actually. Much will transpire with the Rose Parade action, .the break that Wexler got in the mainstream media, some independent political candidates (N Mexico, Maine, Vermont, running on impeachment platforms. There are FAR MORE People involved in impeachment activities than are hanging out in the Ron Paul camp, but no one is showing this!! Ron Paul is NOT calling for impeachment which is a total constitutional nonsense. The US is open to ATTACK if it does not begin impeachment procedings; this is what international law SAYS. IT must follow international law to get at war crimes truth.
Anyway, that is my pitch and I hope you can find a few lines I could put the information into so that people can find it. Wexler already has over 163,000 signatures on HIS petition!! And we aim for 1/4 million signatories .. if each person would refer just one more person to sign, we'd be there in no time!!
For me, I am sick to death of the killing and torture. I am an empath and this all hurts and disrupts my sleeping to have this go on day after day. Many others feel the same.
Anything you can do to help with the impeachment effort would be GREATLY appreciated.
BTW, on the lowlevelradiation blog, there is a GREAT link showing how they use finding copper mines to find uranium -- and the game is very lucrative. The guyz in the nuke business are the VERY LAST PEOPLE ON THIS EARTH who should be dealing with safe energy issues. They are the worst sort of gambler/cowboys/huge profiteers around. They are pushing aboriginal people's all over the place to keep their SICK energy picture going for the HUGE profit$.
Peace, love, light and healing

Subject: Mark Krueger's astro 2008
Date: 31 Dec 2007
I am wishing you the best New Years possible, both for you personally and for our beloved Planet Earth. I wish for you to prosper and continue your great work! I look forward to your compilations. If Mark Krueger is correct, we are in for quite a show. Hang on to your soul and your essence as the spin cycle looks like it will rip all of our clothes off! What we will be left with is the bare naked self a thing of great beauty if we are ready to face our selves. People that have not done any shadow work will be the ones that are the most fearful and resistant and intransigent. I am reminded that in Bringers Of The Dawn, Barbara Marciniak says that each year will be exponentially more intense than the last. The way I see it is that as the old structures, paradigms and belief systems are challenged and ripped up, realities become much more fluid, enabling us to slip and slide through different portals of consciousness, each creating the realities that best reflect the totality of our awareness. Those of us that have been working for so many years on raising our awareness of the Unity in All creation will be seeing more of that. Those of us caught in the surface of life will be in for a lot of frightening masks in the Hall of Mirrors.
2007 for me has been a year of great transformation and growth. I want to share one of the biggest shifts in awareness that happened for me this year. I came to a place where I called back ALL of my projections through all of my lifetimes! I faced them, and owned them, and blessed them. What I was left with was this amazing window, Now I know what it is like to be a Buddha in this world. I can imagine what it is like to walk through this world without projecting all of my agendas, my spin, my stuff on everyone. I cant say that I have perfected this by any means, but it remains in my heart as the Gold Standard for my integrity in interacting with life. As difficult as this past year has been for me, I bless it, based on just this realization alone. There have been many others as well. This has been a year where my life mission has been dismantled, my spirit house has been torn down to the ground, and brick by brick I have taken apart everything I have built my faith on. I stand in a very interesting threshold, kind of naked. It is a sweet, poignant and quiet place to be. Just Being is enough right now. I sometimes get impatient for Life to gift me with my next mission, but this is the gestational time for my soul.
Hugs and Blessings to you,
P.S. You can post the above if it seems appropriate.
The edgiest astrologer on the internet, as Mark has been called, delivers... with laser-like precision, his prescription for surviving our times while having fun doing it. Mark Krueger, whose weekly Planet Visions Update (at [link] ) has consistently amused and intrigued me over several years, is something of cosmic entertainer, not only fashioning double and triple meanings from words he enjoys playing with but bending conventional thinking as well in a consistent refrain to readers to claim your consciousness and clear your karma.
You are on the edge of oblivion. We all are. You are no longer the self that you knew. You are you, your being, your own consciousness. All the rest is a dream, high and low, in and out. The Dream is now upwelling 26,000 years worth of encrusted karmic stories and archetypal shadow bits like there's no tomorrow. The End Times, and all its variations on extinction, are now in full noise. Oblivion is here. It's Leap Year. Like it or not, you are going to leap. I say be intentional, otherwise push will come to shove and we know what happened to Geronimo .
In February, we enter the year of the Rat. Isn't that special, as the Church Lady used to say. How fitting, hissy fitting. Ratsa ruck with this one. All the powermongers will be ratted out as the royal rats that they are. False mudslinging of all sorts shall fly about like the finger in Yellow Submarine. Pluto is dancing in and out of Capricorn, until it makes full entrée for Thanksgiving Day .. and then will stay for fifteen years. The Reaper is here. It is Judgment Day. All the Hoarse Men of the Apocalypse rage on with their peddlings doing their meddlings, but they shall burn in the hell of their unconscious projections and the weight of their profound ignorance and arrogance. The Shift has hit the fantastic indeed. Power is crumbling. You can be yourself. If you aren't being yourself and you are depending on power, you are fucked.

Subject: 9/11 COVERUP blown wide open in "The SHELLGAME" by NYT's Steve Alten
Date: 29 Dec 2007
George Washington's Blog:
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR AIMS AT 9/11 COVERUP WITH BOTH BARRELS BLAZING!
NEW YORK - New York Times bestselling author Steve Alten is releasing a novel January 22nd which addresses the 9/11 stand down, the injection of false radar blips into air traffic controllers' screens, PNAC, the 9/11 Commission whitewash, the Anthrax attacks, and related issues.
New York Times bestselling author Steve Alten is releasing a novel January 22nd which addresses the 9/11 stand down, the injection of false radar blips into air traffic controllers' screens, PNAC, the 9/11 Commission whitewash, the Anthrax attacks, and related issues.
Written in the exciting, cloak-and-dagger style of Tom Clancy, the novel -- The Shell Game -- has a shot at educating a large segment of the American public who would otherwise remain in the dark about some aspects of 9/11.
Alten is well-aware of media censorship of 9/11 truth (for example, he agrees with this analysis, he also sent me an advance copy of the book), and is trying to break through the media blockade using his resume as bestselling author to spread his message.
I just finished reading The SHELL GAME, and caught up with Alten by e-mail.
GEORGE WASHINGTON: I really like The Shell Game, Steve. It had me on the edge of my seat, and I stayed up later than I should have a couple of nights to finish it.
STEVE ALTEN: My books tend to be ... page-turners. The Shell Game does that and adds another twist ... it's all real, or it predicts what may really happen unless we stop the insanity. To stop it you must first be aware of it.
GW: If enough people read The SHELL GAME, it could bypass media censorship regarding 9/11 and reach people who would otherwise not be exposed to the facts. But if it doesn't sell well, then it will simply be an entertaining read for those already aware of the facts behind
9/11. So how are your efforts to promote The Shell Game going?
SA: We've been getting copies into the hands of key 9/11 groups over the last six months. Now it's up to them to create a buzz ... along with my mainstream fans.
GW: The Shell Game reads like a mix of Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum and Dan Brown. Are those 3 authors all influences on your writing?
SA: Clancy, Thomas Harris, Ian Fleming...among others.
GW: Your discussions about 9/11 will be familiar to those who have studied the issue. In addition to Michael Ruppert's Crossing the Rubicon and David Ray Griffin's writings, what other 9/11 writings do you like?
SA: 9/11Truth.org. And videos like Loose Change.
GW: My father-in-law says that people predicted Peak Oil decades ago, and were proven wrong. Does the discovery of the massive new oil reserve in Brazil change your conviction that Peak Oil is upon us?
SA: Unless it is as big as Ghawar ... no. Oil IS running out. If not, do you seriously believe we'd have invaded Iraq?
GW: I've heard before that many of the world's top microbiologists have been killed under suspicious circumstances, but I've never heard anyone link their deaths to an alleged plot to reduce world population through biological warfare. That was the scariest part of the book for me. Do you have any evidence that the elites are really planning a massive depopulation of this kind?
SA: Read Rubicon and extrapolate Peak Oil.
GW: Well, I hope you're wrong. In any event, thanks, Steve. I hope the book does well.
SA: With your help it will ... for all of us.
FLASH UPDATE: Bill Douglas, Janice Matthews, David Ray Griffin, Kevin Ryan, Dr. Robert Bowman and several other prominent 9/11 activists have signed the following endorsement for SHELL GAME:
We, the undersigned, urge everyone seeking truth, peace and justice, to not only purchase this new novel, "The Shell Game," but also to email out this appeal to all you know who seek truth, peace and justice in the form of 9/11 truth coming out. In turn, please urge them to do the same with all their contacts and urge them to do the same. We can break 9/11 truth open if we work together and focus on this project for the next 30 days.

Steve Alten proves his versatility in his latest thriller THE SHELL GAME, a tour-de-force thriller tackling oil, politics, and the state of the world. Controversial, shocking, meticulously researched, and sure to raise many eyebrows in Washington, Alten has produced both a dazzling political thriller and to a cautionary tale for our times. Anyone interested in the labyrinthine world of politics, international gamemanship, and the control of oil in society needs to read this book.

Dennis Kucinich: A peace-seeking idealist to the core
The congressman from Ohio makes his second run for the White House, wanting healthcare for all Americans and peace for the world.
Washington - To understand the importance Dennis Kucinich places on spirituality, scan his generally spare Capitol Hill office: a white cloth from the Dalai Lama, a bust of Gandhi, and a picture representing "conscious light" - a gift from Brahma Kumaris nuns.
There's a Tibetan dragon washbowl and, on his desk, two heavy crucifixes once worn by Catholic nuns who taught him and who, he says, "saved my life."
"Obviously, I connect with all religions," says Representative Kucinich (D) of Ohio, in the midst of his second presidential campaign. "All manners of belief and even non-belief come from a common font, and that is the transcendent power of the human heart.... All those things that would separate us are based on misunderstandings of our nature."
They're somewhat unusual religious views for someone who still considers himself essentially Roman Catholic. But then, little about Kucinich is orthodox.
While his colleagues in Congress recently voted for more military funds for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, he is pushing for immediate withdrawal from Iraq and advocates cutting money from the defense budget. In the middle of the war on terror, he wants to establish a Department of Peace. He's the only Democratic presidential candidate who wants a Medicare system for all Americans, supports gay marriage, and advocates repealing the North American Free Trade Agreement and withdrawing from the World Trade Organization.
The congressman is also, by all reckonings, a long shot for the nomination. The latest national polls have him hovering around 1 percent. (He often wins online polls with strong liberal leanings.)
But Kucinich, who projects supreme confidence in both his views and his abilities, is anything but discouraged.
Another item he keeps in his congressional office is an original script from "The Man of La Mancha," a gift from a cast member. It's an apt memento, since Kucinich has been tilting at windmills and dreaming impossible dreams most of his life.

Subject: New Hampshire, Iowa and Edwards
For the record:
1. New Hampshire is the first state where we are aggressively campaigning. Due to the Party lockout in Iowa, we chose to focus on New Hampshire.
2. I am the only person running for President who voted against the war, against funding the war 100% of the time, against the Patriot Act, and who stands for a universal single-payer not-for-profit healthcare system. Nevertheless I was excluded from Saturday night's ABC Presidential debate, or four tone monologue as it was.
3. In answer to your questions about why I didn't support former Senator John Edwards on the second ballot in Iowa: I have serious concerns about his connections to a Wall Street hedge fund, Fortress Investment Group. While attacking others for accepting campaign money from Washington lobbyists, he is up to his ears in money from Wall Street special interests.
He made half a million dollars in a single year for attending a few meetings for Fortress and has invested a substantial part of his own personal wealth in the hedge fund whose portfolios are responsible for sub-prime predatory lending practices, Medicare privatization, and an entire range of corporate sharp dealings that are driving the middle class into poverty.
While I indicated Senator Obama as a preferred second choice in Iowa, Progressives have fundamental disagreements with him and all of the other Presidential candidates on most of their major positions on the issues.
We must have the courage of our convictions to fully support and vote for what it is we really want. For once, we must realize our power, stop playing tactical games, and vote as a bloc - which, as you know, is what the religious right does and why they often win.
We Progressives are in the majority in this election. We will win only when we refuse to compromise and vote with integrity.
Kucinich the Surprise Winner in Virginia Dems Poll http://www.dennis4president.com/go/homepage-items/kucinich-the-surprise-winner-in-virginia-dems-poll/
The strong showing of grassroots support for Ohio Congressman and Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich continues to be evident across the United States, as the people's choice has just earned another victory in an online poll, this time sponsored by the Democratic Party of Virginia. With the voting ended and the results of nearly 7000 responses in, Kucinich captured first place with 30% of the votes. Hillary Rodham Clinton followed in second place with 27% of the votes, and the rest of the Democratic contenders lined up under in totals under 15%. The Democratic Party of Virginia poll was conducted between December 20 and 23. The question was simple: If the Virginia Democratic presidential primary were held today, which of the six Democratic candidates would you vote for? It should be noted that Chris Dodd was not included in the poll choices because he had not filed with the State Board of Elections by the December 14, 5:00 PM deadline. Dennis Kucinich was the winner. In fact, even as polling continued past the deadline, Kucinich has maintained his lead over his rivals. This bodes well for the candidate and his supporters across America as the February 12 presidential primary date in Virginia nears, with a substantial 103 delegates at stake. (Results are available at www.vademocrats.org.) "This is a surprise victory for me in some ways, but I don't think it is entirely unexpected," said Kucinich today while campaigning in New Hampshire. "Since the beginning of my campaign I have been talking with people across the United States about the issues that matter most to them - affordable health care for all Americans, ending the war in Iraq and a return to a truly constitutional government. My vision for this country is really mainstream, and that's why people are turning to me for real leadership." Just last week Kucinich was the runaway winner in yet another poll of the Democratic Party's progressive, grassroots base, scoring a landslide win by capturing almost 77% of the vote in a nationwide poll sponsored by a coalition of Independent voting groups across the country. Of the more than 80,000 votes cast for Democratic candidates at http://www.independentprimary.com by self-described independent voters, the Ohio Congressman received 61,477 - more than three times the combined total of all the other candidates. Also, The Nation, one of the country's leading political publications, concluded an editorial recently by stating, "In his stands on the issues, Dennis Kucinich comes closest to embodying the ideals of this magazine."
Kucinich Urges Supporters to Back Obama on Second Iowa Ballot (January 01, 2008) http://www.dennis4president.com/go/newsroom/kucinich-urges-supporters-to-back-obama-on-second-iowa-ballot/
DES MOINES, IA - Democratic Presidential candidate and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich opened the New Year by publicly asking his Iowa supporters to vote for him in the caucuses this Thursday, and suggesting that if he did not make the 15% threshold, their second ballot should be for Senator Barack Obama. "This is obviously an 'Iowa-only' recommendation, as Sen. Obama and I are competing in the New Hampshire primary next Tuesday where I want to be the first choice of New Hampshire voters. "I hope Iowans will caucus for me as their first choice this Thursday, because of my singular positions on the war, on health care, and trade. This is an opportunity for people to stand up for themselves. But in those caucus locations where my support doesn't reach the necessary threshold, I strongly encourage all of my supporters to make Barack Obama their second choice. Sen. Obama and I have one thing in common: Change."
Kucinich, top-rated Democrat, excluded from Des Moines Register debate http://www.dennis4president.com/go/newsroom/kucinich,-top%11rated-democrat,-excluded-from-des-moines-register-debate/
DES MOINES, IA The highest polling Democratic Presidential candidate among the Partys progressive, grassroots, activist base, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, has been excluded from the Des Moines Register-sponsored Presidential debate here on Thursday because his Iowa field director operates from a home office rather than a rented storefront.Despite being the top-ranked Presidential candidate in polls conducted by Democracy for America (DFA), Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), and one of the countrys leading progressive publications, The Nation, Kucinich was not invited to participate in the debate because It was our determination that a person working out of his home did not meet our criteria for a campaign office and full-time paid staff in Iowa, according to a statement from the newspapers top officials, including editor Carolyn Washburn. The dismissive reference was to Kucinich Iowa Field Director and State Coordinator Marcos Rubinstein, who coordinates campaign activities from his home office in Dubuque, bolstered by a dozen-or-so other senior campaign staff who have traveled the state over the past several months. ABC violates public interests, endorsing chosen candidates http://www.dennis4president.com/go/alerts-%11-left/abc-violates-public-interests,-endorsing-chosen-candidates/
WASHINGTON, D.C. The Kucinich for President campaign late today filed an emergency complaint with the Federal Communications Commission claiming that the ABC television network is violating its obligation to operate in the public interest by excluding Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich from tomorrow nights scheduled debate in Manchester, NH.Further, the complaint charges, the televised event is not a true presidential primary debate without including all credible candidates, but instead is effectively an endorsement of the candidates selected by ABC. The filing also notes that ABC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walt Disney, Co., whose executives have contributed heavily to other Democratic presidential primary candidates, including Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, former Senator John Edwards, and Governor Bill Richardson. And, the filing points out, Kucinich is the only Democratic presidential candidate who has qualified for Federal matching funds who is being excluded by ABC. (Full FCC complaint.) Although ABC would prefer to only report on easily described and well-known candidates, the proper enforcement of the Federal Communications Act ensures Americas voters that they will have the ability to vote for candidates with varied and new ideas and policies, says the complaint. ABC should not be the first primary. The Kucinich urged that ABC reverse its decision rather than face possible FCC action. Among the so-called criteria established by ABC for inclusion in Saturday nights debate is a fourth-place or better showing in Thursdays Iowa caucuses. Kucinich effectively by-passed the Iowa caucuses because the state Democratic Party and other political and institutional interests there excluded him from two earlier debates and from Party-sponsored functions. Instead, the Kucinich campaign has focused heavily on New Hampshire. To underscore Kucinichs standing as both a credible and qualified candidate, the emergency complaint notes that he has campaign offices in Keene, Dover, Manchester, and Concord, paid staff, hundreds of campaign volunteers, and significant financial contributions from residents of New Hampshire. In addition, Complainant Kucinich has been the winner in national online polls conducted by Democracy for America (receiving almost 50,000 votes while the closest competitor only received 38,000), Virginia State Democratic Party (receiving 30% of the Democratic vote while the closest competitor received 27%), Independent Voters (75% of the Democratic vote out of 80,000 online voters), as well as polls by Progressive Democrats of America and the Nation. In an ABC News poll, Complainant Kucinich received the most support from 42,487 voters (garnering 35% of the vote to 22% for the next closest candidate) who were asked who won the Democratic presidential primary debate on August 19, 2007. Also, Kucinichs opponents share very similar policy platforms while Kucinich offers very different positions on issues such as the war in Iraq and health care reform. His exclusion from the debate, therefore, is contrary to the public interest to afford reasonable opportunity for the discussion of conflicting views of issues of public importance. ABCs arbitrary and capricious decision causes irreparable harm to the public interest by robbing the voters of the opportunity to hear his policy platform, including his pro-peace initiatives, says the complaint.

Subject: What to expect from the next US Administration
Up until December 3rd, it was very difficult to predict what might happen in 2008. We had every sign that a nuclear attack was being prepared for Iran. There was talk of the neocons declaring a national emergency, suspending the Constitution, and cancelling the next election. Basically, the neocons seemed to be out of control, deranged almost, and we didn't know what might be coming our way.
On December 3rd, when the National Intelligence Estimate was made public, declaring that Iran has no nuclear weapons program, it immediately became apparent that the Iran attack was off, simplifying the picture a bit. In the ensuing days, by watching how Bush was responding to the new circumstance, it became apparent the cancellation of the Iran project was not something that was wanted by the White House. Higher ups had made the decision. As subsequent events have unfolded, it becomes clear that more than Iran was cancelled. The whole neocon program is being rapidly reined in.
I talked about these things in great detail in an earlier posting, "dialog on recent themes" (Check also HERE). But that analysis didn't try to anticipate very much about the next administration, except in broad strokes. I think the picture is now beginning to come into focus. It took me a while to put the pieces back together again, after the December 3rd announcement shook up the table a bit.
I think we can see the focus of the next administration by watching Al Gore. He's going around preaching the gospel of climate change, and that is rapidly becoming the new cause celebre for the 'international community'. It's more than a campaign by Gore, we're seeing a campaign being supported by the mass media, by the powers that be. We are clearly being prepared for a 'new show', after the 'Bush show', and the 'new show' is going to be about carbon taxes and credits, new energy sources, more efficient cars, biofuels, and all those other things that are allegedly related to climate change and peak oil.
In order to clear the way for the new show, it seems pretty clear that the new administration will begin with some easy political wins, by rapidly cleaning up some of the obvious messes left by the neocons. Closing down Guantanamo, and declaring that rendition flights have been abandoned, would gain a lot of points at no real cost (secret flights and prisons would undoubtedly continue). Iraq has already been destabilized and prepared for balkanization, and permanent US bases have already been built. Another easy win will be for US troops to withdraw to their bases and the oil fields, for the war to be declared over, and for Iraq to be split up into ethnic provinces, leaving them to squabble among themselves. It can all be portrayed in the media as a 'victory for peace and democracy'.
What then, can we expect from this new show? What consequences are likely to follow from implementing the kind of policies that Al Gore and the media have been talking about, around climate change, energy independence, etc.?
At a general level, it is clear that those kinds of policies do not involve fundamental changes in how our societies operate. We'll still have cars, only they might be a bit more efficient, and we'll be paying more for fuel and taxes to operate them. We'll still be shipping products from China that we could produce locally, and we'll still be depending on long-distance trucking. We'll still be using agricultural methods that are highly petroleum-dependent, for tractors, fertilizers, and pesticides. Research and development of new energy sources will lead to lots of government subsidies, and it may get us a bit more energy, but not nearly enough to replace petroleum. As long as our transport and other infrastructures remain basically unchanged, we remain unsustainable, dependent on petroleum, and none of the Gore-like initiatives change the overall energy picture, carbon picture, or climate picture in any significant way.
On the face of it then, the whole new show is destined to fail. Climate change will not be alleviated and peak oil will loom as alarmingly as ever, albeit postponed for a bit. Are we to assume then that our new leaders are stupid? I have found that the presumption of 'government incompetence' is seldom a useful assumption in evaluating the behavior of governments. We only reach such a conclusion if we take their official rhetoric at face value. In terms of 'achieving democracy', the official rhetoric, Bush has been 'incompetent' in Iraq. But in terms of the real agenda -- building permanent bases and controlling the oil -- he has in fact been successful. I have found that this is always the pattern: some real agenda is always being achieved by the policies in force, despite the apparent bungling in terms of the official agenda.
In order to begin figuring out what the 'real agenda' is, behind Gore-like policies, let's look first at one example: biofuels. Producing biofuels does give us another energy source, but it also removes land from food production. As a consequence of the already-existing biofuels market, market prices for grain and other potential biofuels are now being driven by energy prices. Global food prices are therefore rising rapidly, while at the same time food-production acreage is being reduced. These two things will directly and drastically increase world hunger, particularly in the poorest regions. A Gore-inspired administration will be promoting an expansion of biofuel programs on a global scale, and it will be patting itself on the back for its noble energy-saving deeds.
All of this will be occurring in a context where we are facing a global food crisis generally. We haven't seen many headlines on this topic, but the world is sitting on the brink of a major food crisis. Emergency stockpiles are at low ebb, production levels are down, crop failures are up, etc. It's a very nasty picture.
In this context, the net consequence of a major biofuel agenda comes down to intentional genocide. In order to provide marginally more fuel to the over-consuming industrialized nations, untold millions will starve in the third world, in addition to those untold millions that are already starving. The marginal energy gain is so small by comparison, that we must accept that the biofuels agenda is PRIMARILY about genocide. However when we begin reading about new famines breaking out, perhaps in Brazil where biofuels are now going into massive production, the headlines will blame it on droughts, or crop failures, or some other excuse, as they always do. We will meanwhile feel a 'green glow' every time we fill up our Prius with biofuels, unaware of what damage we are doing. And perhaps we'll donate to Oxfam, or adopt some third world child and send them letters.
A Gore agenda is simply genocidal imperialism hiding under a new mask, a new show. Instead of killing off the Indians by killing their buffalo, it kills off populations by removing their access to food in other ways. Once again, 'they' must be sacrificed so that 'our' way of life can continue and expand. We might note here that more Iraqis died under Bill Clinton's sanctions that have been killed in the current Iraq war. In Bill Clinton's time the pattern was invisible genocide, rather than the more violent Bush variety. Apparently in Hillary Clinton's time we are to return to that earlier invisible pattern.
Clearly the consequences of a Gore agenda are genocidal, but one might question whether that is a primary intended outcome. I've been suggesting that it is, and I think more elaboration is in order on that point. I haven't made the case very well yet, I've merely presented some of the evidence and suggested a pattern. In order to get a proper perspective on this issue, we need to step back a bit, and consider the bigger picture of the industrialized world vis a vis the third world, in the face of a broad range of mounting resource shortages.
It seems very clear that the industrialized nations have no intention of changing the basic path they are on. More industrial growth, more energy consumption, continued use of energy-intensive agricultural methods, etc. The energy band-aids of a Gore agenda make no significant difference in this picture, they simply proclaim the intention to proceed with business as usual.
The only way the industrialized North can continue on this path is by taking over more and more of the third world's resources for its own use. As the industrial appetite for resources continues to grow at a rapid rate, and as our global resources are increasingly stressed, we are going to see a very rapid expansion of third world hunger and starvation -- the globalization of African-scale famines. This is inevitable while the North stays on this basic path, whether we have Gore-like policies or some other set of policies is of little consequence.
This 'inevitability' of mass die-offs in the third world is well known to those who run the industrial nations, the ones who give us alternate versions of Clinton and Bush to be our leaders and set our temporary agendas. From the perspective of the heights of power, the question becomes, "How can we manage these die-offs so that they cause the least disruption in the global economy, and so that they don't arouse too much public outcry?" Of course once you begin managing die-offs, then you are engaging in genocide, ie, arranging for particular populations to die in preference to others.
The pattern for the management strategy has been made very clear in Sub-Saharan Africa, where all those civil wars, genocidal atrocities, droughts, and famines have been occurring. Not many people realize that these disasters have been systematically imposed on Africa, by means of IMF requirements, covert destabilization programs, the widespread distribution of modern weapons, the manipulations of international banks, the dedication of agricultural land to Northern consumption, and the list goes on. Not only is Africa being starved to death by market forces, but the process is being accelerated by covert genocidal interventions.
In Africa we see a full-scale Holocaust, a massive genocide program in process, or should I say we see it not. For in the media it's nothing like that. We read that 'tribal conflicts have flared up', but we don't hear about the two CIA bombings that were each blamed on the 'other side', and which ignited the fracas, a fracas that could become a civil war. We read about a famine due to 'drought', and we aren't told that there would be plenty of water if it weren't for all the coffee-export plantations using up the local water. We don't see genocide, we see Africans befallen with unfortunate miseries, all due to the vagaries of Mother Nature.
Thus the pattern of managing die-offs becomes clear. It has been tested satisfactorily in Africa, and we can expect the proven pattern to be employed in future. They pick a population that they consider 'redundant', they undertake a program of acquiring that population's resources, and then to speed up the process of removal they engage in various covert acts of genocide. In this way the world's population can be whittled down piecemeal, and manageably, as the North gradually requires the utilization of ALL the world's resources for its own exclusive use. Unfortunately for the North, even that won't be enough to enable industrial growth to continue. The South is being killed off only that the unsustainable North can continue as it is a wee bit longer.
Meanwhile, the media in the North paints a picture in which only nature causes famines, and the role of the North is always to provide aid, to the extent it can. Concerned viewers are given convenient numbers to call, so they can dispel their concern with a simple donation that will 'save a child', or 'give a family a goat'. No genocide around here; we're the good guys. See no evil, feel just fine. By the way, too bad about those famines over there.
The Gore-style policies are not just genocidal, they are formidably genocidal. When they start taking massive amounts of land out of food production, and bring about a substantial increases in global food prices, in the face of an already stressed world food situation, they could bring about in a very short time -- one harvest season -- famine on a scale we have never have seen before. How serious the outcome is depends entirely on how aggressively the new administration pursues the Gore-style agenda. They've got genocide down to a science, with tunable parameters.
Apparently, having field tested Holocaust tactics in Sub-Saharan Africa, a decision has been made to go global with the program. For this purpose, the Gore-style policies have the potential to be the appropriate Weapon of Mass Destruction, the equivalent in the starvation game to nukes in the kill-by-fire game. This decision to go global was evidently made some time ago, no doubt just before Gore was asked to make "An Inconvenient Truth". The film was the first signal of which way the winds were going to blow, the first preview of the 'new show'.
The primary mission of the Hillary administration, under the banners of 'doing something about climate change and peak oil', will evidently be to undertake a massive resource grab in the global South, leading to the selective and massive elimination of certain populations through starvation. In other words, the mission is to expand the starving-Africa model globally, a process that will presumably be helped along by the usual shadowy suspects in their usual destabilizing roles.
My big fear with the Bush regime was the likely attack on Iran...or was it the unleashing of the Gestapo? It was a close race in those dark days. Now we are on the verge of a regime bent on genocide on a scale that would put the Nazis to shame. I suggest that we have escaped the kettle only to fall into the frying pan.
I hope no one out there has any romantic notions about the new administration, and I hope everyone realizes that the political process can never be used to solve our problems; that system is in fact the heart of our problem. I also hope it is clear to everyone that global genocide is an inevitable consequence of the continuation of this insane capitalist system, whether you agree with most of my analysis or not. And in the end, capitalism can't last anyway.
Only when you have reached that deep level of hopelessness, where you see no avenue of escape, can you clear your mind enough to begin to see where the real problem lies. The real problem lies, my friends, in the fact that you and I have nothing to say about how our societies are run. Any one of us has more sense than the people who are running things, and we certainly have our fellow beings more at heart. Our problem lies in our own powerlessness, leaving power in the hands of those who always abuse it, in one way or another, in one age after another.
Our challenge as a sentient species, and our response if we seek to do anything about the growth-thru-genocide agenda, is to begin to empower ourselves, us ordinary people, without reference to the useless political process. How to pursue our empowerment must be the aim of our investigations, and pursuing that empowerment must be the point of our activism.
happy new year,
Burning Biofuels May Be Worse Than Coal and Oil http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/010408EA.shtml
Alok Jha, The Guardian UK: "Using biofuels made from corn, sugar cane and soy could have a greater environmental impact than burning fossil fuels, according to experts. Although the fuels themselves emit fewer greenhouse gases, they all have higher costs in terms of biodiversity loss and destruction of farmland."
Courting Carmageddon: The Real Meaning of Gore's Nobel Prize (Oct 16, 2007) http://www.consumertrap.com/?p=20
( . . . ) What about plant-based biofuels such as ethanol, methanol, and biodiesel? Alas, these also require very large up-front energy inputs, including heavy use of petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides to grow the plants, highly mechanized harvesting and crop-transport operations, and then complex distillation, refining, and fuel-distribution processes. Research that takes full account of all these up-front energy inputs for even the most promising of the bio-fuels corn ethanol shows that [e]thanol production using corn grain require[s] 29% more fossil energy than the ethanol fuel produce[s] when burned. Even if scientists someday find a way to coax energy surpluses from biofuels, mass producing them on anything like adequate scale would snatch huge tracts of cropland away from food production. Experts who have studied this issue find that converting the U.S. car fleet to corn ethanol would, by the year 2012, require all the available cropland area in the United States. By the year 2036, not only the entire US cropland area but also the entire land area now used for range and pasture would be required. Finally, by 2048, virtually the whole country, with the exception of cities, would be covered by corn plantations. Even with automobiles twice as fuel-efficient as present ones the strongest purported solution proffered by Al Gore and the above figures would only be halved meaning biofuels would eat up half of all our ex-urban land within four decades. If you are willing to ponder these realities, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that biofuels are simply a placeholder pipedream, a marketable ruse that may buy a bit more time for non-discussion of the automobile's increasingly disastrous reign over the United States. The inner documentary: A Compelling Necessity http://rkmcdocs.blogspot.com/2007/08/film-treatment-compelling-necessity.html
The inner documentary is self-standing in its own right, and it deals with the general crisis of unsustainability and environmental degradation, focusing in on food production in particular. By means of interviews and footage taken at various locations around the world, interspersed with interviews with academic experts, the viewer will be introduced to the issues of topsoil loss, desertification, deforestation, declining water tables and fishing stocks, etc.leading to a realization that humanity is facing a food crisis that makes peak oil and global warming seem like minor problems in comparison. The documentary goes deeper, showing how these problems are caused / exacerbated by industrial food-production methods that are highly wasteful of water and petroleum resources, and heedless of environmental degradation and health issues. Going still deeper, the documentary explores the political and economic factors driving these food-production methods, showing the effects of privatization, IMF restructuring programs, etc. In particular, the documentary will show how the promotion of biofuels and carbon trading, presumably intended to address peak oil and global warming, are in fact making things worse by taking land out of food production, causing deforestation, and encouraging the continuation of unsustainable infrastructures in the developed world. But the documentary is not all doom and gloom, far from it. The documentary will also show examples of small-scale, sustainable practices, some in traditional third-world settings, and some in modern settings, where we see what might be characterized as a sustainability movement. Comparisons will be drawn between industrial and sustainable practices, as regards food quality, and as regards productivity per unit of resources expended (land, energy, petroleum-derived products, water, labor, etc.) Special emphasis will be given to the conclusion that sustainable practices are practical and achievable, and they provide real hope for addressing the global food crisis. WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama has put to rest the question of whether a black presidential candidate can win in white America.
His victory in 95 percent white Iowa proved that he could appeal across racial lines and even draw women away from Hillary Rodham Clinton despite her push for them to make her the first female president. Next he'll try to build on his record in New Hampshire, which is 96 percent white.
Obama did not appeal so openly to make history as the first black to occupy the Oval Office; he rarely mentioned that he was black.
"You've got to have hope if you are a black man named Obama running for the presidency of the United States of America,'' Obama said during a late-night campaign stop two days before the caucus. It was one of his rare mentions of what he had to overcome.
Obama's candidacy has been dogged by questions about whether he'd be electable against a Republican. Pressed on that during a campaign stop in New Hampshire over the summer, Obama said his race would be an asset because it would bring blacks to the polls in record numbers and give the Democrats victories in Southern states that have been voting Republican for decades.
``I'm probably the only candidate who, having won the nomination, can actually redraw the political map,'' Obama said at the time. "I guarantee you African-American turnout, if I'm the nominee, goes up 30 percent around the country, minimum. Young people's percentage of the vote goes up 25-30 percent. So we're in a position to put states in play that haven't been in play since LBJ.''
Lyndon Baines Johnson ran for president in 1964 and won in a landslide. But since then the South has turned into a Republican stronghold.
Obama's prediction about black voter turnout can't be tested in Iowa or New Hampshire, but young voters did come to the polls in larger numbers.
Nearly a quarter of Democratic caucus-goers interviewed in the entrance poll were under 30 years old, a jump from 2004. Obama got 57 percent of the vote from the under-30 crowd, compared with just 14 percent for 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards and 11 percent for Clinton. Twenty-eight percent of Obama's support came from the under-30 set, according to a survey of voters entering the caucuses by The Associated Press and the television networks.
Obama also won the greatest percentages of independents, first-time caucus-goers, self-identified liberals and, most troubling for Clinton, women. Obama got 35 percent of women voters, compared to 30 percent for Clinton and 23 percent for Edwards. This despite the fact that Clinton focused her campaign on bringing fellow women to the polls.
Rev. Jesse Jackson took note that "this is the 40th year since the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Tonight he would proud of Barack, proud of Iowa and proud of America.''
Democratic consultant Jamal Simmons said Obama's victory "proves that America is changing when it comes to race and politics.''
"Winning in Iowa is not winning the nomination, but is very significant,'' Simmons said. ``Tonight Barack Obama has made it more true that every black child in America can do whatever they want to if they work hard for it - really.''
Obama's Victory Upends His Party's Politics http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/010408J.shtml
Peter Wallsten reports for The Los Angeles Times, "Barack Obama's surprisingly convincing win in Iowa on Thursday upended the Democratic presidential race and overturned some of the fundamental assumptions of modern-day American politics."

Subject: Peering into the Future
Here is a recent article of mine, which was written for The Bangladesh Today International and came out in Dacca on 29th December (parts of it address Bangladeshis). It might be of interest to you since it paints a Very Big Picture about our current century and what lies ahead.
An article by Palden Jenkins for The Bangladesh Today - Late December 2007
The 20th Century didn't really start until World War One broke out in 1914. The century was characterised by 'developed world' domination, the successor to 19th Century colonialism. We saw motor cars, planes, plastics, electronics, gizmos, radio, TV and film. There was a struggle between capitalism, fascism and socialism which fascism lost and capitalism eventually won though it didn't look like this at first. We saw globalisation, transnational corporations, vast population growth, over-consumption by some and overwork by most. Engines, rotors, pipes, wires and transmitters went everywhere. Vast wars and crises arose, killing people in millions. Mega-cities spread like fungus.
By 2050 solar power could end U.S. dependence on foreign oil and slash greenhouse gas emissions
By Ken Zweibel, James Mason and Vasilis Fthenakis
A massive switch from coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power plants to solar power plants could supply 69 percent of the U.S.s electricity and 35 percent of its total energy by 2050.
A vast area of photovoltaic cells would have to be erected in the Southwest. Excess daytime energy would be stored as compressed air in underground caverns to be tapped during nighttime hours.
Large solar concentrator power plants would be built as well.
A new direct-current power transmission backbone would deliver solar electricity across the country.
But $420 billion in subsidies from 2011 to 2050 would be required to fund the infrastructure and make it cost-competitive.
High prices for gasoline and home heating oil are here to stay. The U.S. is at war in the Middle East at least in part to protect its foreign oil interests. And as China, India and other nations rapidly increase their demand for fossil fuels, future fighting over energy looms large. In the meantime, power plants that burn coal, oil and natural gas, as well as vehicles everywhere, continue to pour millions of tons of pollutants and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere annually, threatening the planet.
Well-meaning scientists, engineers, economists and politicians have proposed various steps that could slightly reduce fossil-fuel use and emissions. These steps are not enough. The U.S. needs a bold plan to free itself from fossil fuels. Our analysis convinces us that a massive switch to solar power is the logical answer.
Solar energys potential is off the chart. The energy in sunlight striking the earth for 40 minutes is equivalent to global energy consumption for a year. The U.S. is lucky to be endowed with a vast resource; at least 250,000 square miles of land in the Southwest alone are suitable for constructing solar power plants, and that land receives more than 4,500 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) of solar radiation a year. Converting only 2.5 percent of that radiation into electricity would match the nations total energy consumption in 2006.
To convert the country to solar power, huge tracts of land would have to be covered with photovoltaic panels and solar heating troughs. A direct-current (DC) transmission backbone would also have to be erected to send that energy efficiently across the nation.
The technology is ready. On the following pages we present a grand plan that could provide 69 percent of the U.S.s electricity and 35 percent of its total energy (which includes transportation) with solar power by 2050. We project that this energy could be sold to consumers at rates equivalent to todays rates for conventional power sources, about five cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). If wind, biomass and geothermal sources were also developed, renewable energy could provide 100 percent of the nations electricity and 90 percent of its energy by 2100.
The federal government would have to invest more than $400 billion over the next 40 years to complete the 2050 plan. That investment is substantial, but the payoff is greater. Solar plants consume little or no fuel, saving billions of dollars year after year. The infrastructure would displace 300 large coal-fired power plants and 300 more large natural gas plants and all the fuels they consume. The plan would effectively eliminate all imported oil, fundamentally cutting U.S. trade deficits and easing political tension in the Middle East and elsewhere. Because solar technologies are almost pollution-free, the plan would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants by 1.7 billion tons a year, and another 1.9 billion tons from gasoline vehicles would be displaced by plug-in hybrids refueled by the solar power grid. In 2050 U.S. carbon dioxide emissions would be 62 percent below 2005 levels, putting a major brake on global warming.
Our model is not an austerity plan, because it includes a 1 percent annual increase in demand, which would sustain lifestyles similar to those today with expected efficiency improvements in energy generation and use. Perhaps the biggest question is how to pay for a $420-billion overhaul of the nations energy infrastructure. One of the most common ideas is a carbon tax. The International Energy Agency suggests that a carbon tax of $40 to $90 per ton of coal will be required to induce electricity generators to adopt carbon capture and storage systems to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This tax is equivalent to raising the price of electricity by one to two cents per kWh. But our plan is less expensive. The $420 billion could be generated with a carbon tax of 0.5 cent per kWh. Given that electricity today generally sells for six to 10 cents per kWh, adding 0.5 cent per kWh seems reasonable.
Congress could establish the financial incentives by adopting a national renewable energy plan. Consider the U.S. Farm Price Support program, which has been justified in terms of national security. A solar price support program would secure the nations energy future, vital to the countrys long-term health. Subsidies would be gradually deployed from 2011 to 2020. With a standard 30-year payoff interval, the subsidies would end from 2041 to 2050. The HVDC transmission companies would not have to be subsidized, because they would finance construction of lines and converter stations just as they now finance AC lines, earning revenues by delivering electricity.
Although $420 billion is substantial, the annual expense would be less than the current U.S. Farm Price Support program. It is also less than the tax subsidies that have been levied to build the countrys high-speed telecommunications infrastructure over the past 35 years. And it frees the U.S. from policy and budget issues driven by international energy conflicts.
Without subsidies, the solar grand plan is impossible. Other countries have reached similar conclusions: Japan is already building a large, subsidized solar infrastructure, and Germany has embarked on a nationwide program. Although the investment is high, it is important to remember that the energy source, sunlight, is free. There are no annual fuel or pollution-control costs like those for coal, oil or nuclear power, and only a slight cost for natural gas in compressed-air systems, although hydrogen or biofuels could displace that, too. When fuel savings are factored in, the cost of solar would be a bargain in coming decades. But we cannot wait until then to begin scaling up.
Critics have raised other concerns, such as whether material constraints could stifle large-scale installation. With rapid deployment, temporary shortages are possible. But several types of cells exist that use different material combinations. Better processing and recycling are also reducing the amount of materials that cells require. And in the long term, old solar cells can largely be recycled into new solar cells, changing our energy supply picture from depletable fuels to recyclable materials.
The greatest obstacle to implementing a renewable U.S. energy system is not technology or money, however. It is the lack of public awareness that solar power is a practical alternativeand one that can fuel transportation as well. Forward-looking thinkers should try to inspire U.S. citizens, and their political and scientific leaders, about solar powers incredible potential. Once Americans realize that potential, we believe the desire for energy self-sufficiency and the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions will prompt them to adopt a national solar plan.
$420 billion in subsidies over the next 40 years seems a small price to pay for energy independence, considering we've already wasted $1-2 trillion in the last 5 years on Iraq! I wish we had politicians that would see this.
BBC News is reporting that a French company has developed a pollution-free car which runs on compressed air. India's Tata Motors has the car under production and it may be on sale in Europe and India by the end of the year.
The air car, also known as the Mini-CAT or City Cat, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 200 km on a 1.5 euro fill-up -- roughly 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000.
The car features a fibreglass body and a revolutionary electrical system and is completely computer-controlled. It is powered by the expansion of compressed air, using no combustion at all, and the exhaust is entirely clean and cool enough for use in the internal air conditioning system.
Tata Motors is known for its interest in innovation and has been selling compressed gas buses since 2000. It is currently working on producing the world's cheapest car, which will be almost 100% plastic and will sell in India for about $2500.
Tata is also expanding into the world market. It acquired Korea's Daweoo in 2004 and is now the top bidder to purchase the originally British Jaguar and Land Rover lines from the United States' troubled Ford Motor Company.

French Compressed Air Car Set for Take-Off in India http://www.planetark.org/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/46298/story.htm
CARROS, France - A car that runs on air? What seemed like a pipe dream may soon become reality as Frenchman Guy Negre hopes versions of his compressed air car will be produced in India this year by Tata Motors Ltd after a 15 year quest for backers for his invention. Negre believes the time is right for his design with oil prices at record highs and pressure on carmakers to improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. "It is clear that with oil at US$100 a barrel this will force people to change their use of fuel and pollute less," Negre told Reuters in an interview at his firm Motor Development International (MDI), based near Nice in the south of France. "My car is zero pollution in town and almost no pollution on the highways," he added, saying the vehicle could travel 100 kilometres at a cost of one euro in fuel. The former Formula One motor racing engineer's invention depends on pressurised air to move the pistons, which in turn help to compress the air again in a reservoir. The engine also has an electric motor, which needs to be periodically recharged, to top up the air pressure. The bottles of compressed air -- similar to those used by divers -- can be filled up at service stations in several minutes. The latest versions of the cars -- MDI made an entire series of prototypes of engines and vehicles -- also include a fuel engine option to extend the car's range when not in reach of a special power plug or service station. Tata, India's largest carmaker with revenue of US$7.2 billion in its last financial year, concluded a deal in 2007, investing 20 million euros (US$29.4 million). Pre-production in India is set for 2008, Negre said. The vehicle, protected by some 50 patents, will cost some 3,500 to 4,000 euros. Using composite materials, it will weigh not more than 330 kilos (727.5 lb) and its maximum speed is 150 kilometres (93.21 miles) per hour. "The lighter the vehicle, the less it consumes and the less its pollutes and the cheaper it is; it's simple," Negre said. CLIP

US Budget for 2008 : 65% ($700 billions) allocated for "SECURITY FUNDING"
I have just found a very interesting information on the official White House website : The US Budget for 2008
Therefore for 2008, Security Funding represents about 60% of the Total US Budget.
In fact it is even more, as there is also an item called Emergency Funding for Global war on terror with an extra $145 billions for 2008.
Hence the real figure is indeed 65% of the total budget committed to Security Funding !!!
How much for Health and Human Services ?? 7% of the total budget
For Education ?? 6% of the total budget
For Environment Protection ? Less than 1% of the total budget....
In other words 2/3 of what the average American pay in Taxes goes to support death and destruction on this planet....
What was the greatest failure of 2007? President Bush's "surge" in Iraq? The decline in the value of the US dollar? Subprime mortgages? No. The greatest failure of 2007 was the newly sworn in Democratic Congress.
The American people's attempt in November 2006 to rein in a rogue government, which has committed the US to costly military adventures while running roughshod over the US Constitution, failed. Replacing Republicans with Democrats in the House and Senate has made no difference.
The assault on the US Constitution by the Democratic Party is as determined as the assault by the Republicans. On October 23, 2007, the House passed a bill sponsored by California Democratic congresswoman Jane Harman, chairwoman of a Homeland Security subcommittee, that overturns the constitutionally guaranteed rights to free expression, association, and assembly.
The bill passed the House on a vote of 404-6. In the Senate the bill is sponsored by Maine Republican Susan Collins and apparently faces no meaningful opposition.
Harman's bill is called the "Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act."When HR 1955 becomes law, it will create a commission tasked with identifying extremist people, groups, and ideas. The commission will hold hearings around the country, taking testimony and compiling a list of dangerous people and beliefs. The bill will, in short, create massive terrorism in the United States. But the perpetrators of terrorism will not be Muslim terrorists; they will be government agents and fellow citizens.
We are beginning to see who will be the inmates of the detention centers being built in the US by Halliburton under government contract.
Who will be on the "extremist beliefs" list? The answer is: civil libertarians, critics of Israel, 9/11 skeptics, critics of the administration's wars and foreign policies, critics of the administration's use of kidnapping, rendition, torture and violation of the Geneva Conventions, and critics of the administration's spying on Americans. Anyone in the way of a powerful interest group--such as environmentalists opposing politically connected developers--is also a candidate for the list.
The "Extremist Beliefs Commission" is the mechanism for identifying Americans who pose "a threat to domestic security" and a threat of "homegrown terrorism" that "cannot be easily prevented through traditional federal intelligence or law enforcement efforts."
This bill is a boon for nasty people. That SOB who stole your girlfriend, that hussy who stole your boyfriend, the gun owner next door--just report them to Homeland Security as holders of extreme beliefs. Homeland Security needs suspects, so they are not going to check. Under the new regime, accusation is evidence. Moreover, "our" elected representatives will never admit that they voted for a bill and created an "Extremist Belief Commission" for which there is neither need nor constitutional basis.
That boss who harasses you for coming late to work--he's a good candidate to be reported; so is that minority employee that you can't fire for any normal reason. So is the husband of that good-looking woman you have been unable to seduce. Every kind of quarrel and jealousy can now be settled with a phone call to Homeland Security.
Soon Halliburton will be building more detention centers.
Americans are so far removed from the roots of their liberty that they just don't get it. Most Americans don't know what habeas corpus is or why it is important to them. But they know what they want, and Jane Harman has given them a new way to settle scores and to advance their own interests.
Even educated liberals believe that the US Constitution is a "living document" that can be changed to mean whatever it needs to mean in order to accommodate some new important cause, such as abortion and legal privileges for minorities and the handicapped. Today it is the "war on terror" that the Constitution must accommodate. Tomorrow it can be the war on whomever or whatever.
Think about it. More than six years ago the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked. The US government blamed it on al Qaeda. The 9/11 Commission Report has been subjected to criticism by a large number of qualified people--including the commission's chairman and co-chairman.
Since 9/11 there have been no terrorist attacks in the US. The FBI has tried to orchestrate a few, but the "terrorist plots" never got beyond talk organized and led by FBI agents. There are no visible extremist groups other than the neoconservatives that control the government in Washington. But somehow the House of Representatives overwhelmingly sees a need to create a commission to take testimony and search out extremist views (outside of Washington, of course).
This search for extremist views comes after President Bush and the Justice (sic) Department declared that the President can ignore habeas corpus, ignore the Geneva Conventions, seize people without evidence, hold them indefinitely without presenting charges, torture them until they confess to some made up crime, and take over the government by declaring an emergency. Of course, none of these "patriotic" views are extremist.
The search for extremist views follows also the granting of contracts to Halliburton to build detention centers in the US. No member of Congress or the executive branch ever explained the need for the detention centers or who the detainees would be. Of course, there is nothing extremist about building detention centers in the US for undisclosed inmates.
Clearly the detention centers are not meant to just stand there empty. Thanks to 2007's greatest failure--the Democratic Congress--there is to be an "Extremist Beliefs Commission" to secure inmates for Bush's detention centers.
President Bush promises us that the wars he has launched will cause the "untamed fire of freedom" to "reach the darkest corners of our world." Meanwhile in America the fire of freedom has not only been tamed but also is being extinguished.
The light of liberty has gone out in the United States.

Brasscheck TV: Top Ten Videos of 2007
Here are the Top 10 videos that people viewed on Brasscheck TV in 2007:
We've done it. We've finally reached the psychologically important $100/barrel oil. The recent surge that got us there is more likely due to the plummeting dollar than other factors, but nonetheless will ultimately impact the price paid for gasoline at the pump. But even as the price goes higher, there are additional costs that are not paid at the pump. What are they, and who's paying them?
In addition to the internalized cost of fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel we must also consider the many significant externalized costs. Of these externalized costs some are internalized by tax-payers (oil industry subsidies, military patrols of oil shipping lanes, etc.) while others are left for the global population and future generations to bear (climate change damages, global health effects, etc.).
Let's take 2005 numbers because that's what I have available (the thought process is what matters):
The average US retail gasoline price during 2005 was $2.240. During that same time period the retail price of US No. 2 diesel (on highway) was $2.402. Additionally, the subsidized rate for agricultural (off highway) diesel was $1.65 in 2005. Since agricultural diesel is essentially the same as on-highway diesel (except for the addition of red dye), the US government (i.e. taxpayers) subsidizes $0.752 of every gallon ($2.402 - $1.65).
In addition to this farm subsidy the US government subsidizes all petroleum fuel with over $49 billion in military expenses to ensure the flow of Persian Gulf petroleum resources, the equivalent of $1.17 per gallon. According to the International Center for Technology Assessment and the conservative National Defense Council Foundation, the true cost of gasoline and diesel is a minimum of $5.60 per gallon and over $5.20 per gallon, respectively.
Using the 2005 average US retail fuel prices mentioned above, regular gasoline during 2005 was therefore subsidized between $3.36 and $2.96, and diesel fuel is subsidized between $3.20 and $2.80, at a minimum. This also means that the total subsidy for agricultural diesel amounts to between $3.95 and $3.55 per gallon. Since fuel is a variable input, the consumer is indirectly responsible for these additional costs relative to each purchase made. However, this burden is spread through society through taxation, based on income level, not purchasing habits. Since taxes are seen as a given ("two things are certain in life: death and taxes") people do not realize the true cost of purchases that they make.
The truly externalized costs of fuel use, such as the cost of global climate change, are more difficult to quantify since the effects of today's CO2 emissions may affect the climate for several years into the future. In fact, the estimated half-life (the time in which half of a given substance decays) of atmospheric CO2 is 38 years. However, very little data exists on the projected costs of today's CO2 emissions in future years so we must rely on current data on emissions and global climate-change related damages.
In 2003 global CO2 emissions exceeded 7500 million metric tons (Mt) as atmospheric CO2 levels reached 376.3 PPM (0.03763%). Pre-industrial levels were around 280 PPM (0.028%). According to Senior UN official Klaus Toepfer the global cost of climate change in 2003 was $60 billion. Therefore the climate change related portion of the cost of CO2 emissions is $8.00 per ton ($60x109 / 7.5x109 t).
According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report human-induced changes in the Earth's climate lead to at least 5 million cases of illness and more than 150,000 deaths every year. The standard insurance industry figure for the value of a human life is given at $1 million, making the global cost of human lives due to climate change $150 Billion. Therefore the human health related portion of the cost of CO2 emissions is $20.00 per ton ($150x109 / 7.5x109 t). There are additional health costs, such as those associated with asthma but it's even more complicated to add them here.
According to the EPA, "a gallon of gasoline is assumed to produce 8.8 kilograms (or 19.4 pounds) of CO2" which, thrown into the math above ($28 per ton * 8.8kg) tacks on about 25 more cents to the gallon's price.
This analysis is likely quite conservative and is meant as an illustration that gives light to the many hidden costs we are already paying out of pocket, if not at the pump. Google "True Price of a Gallon of Gas" for a variety of other estimates.
100-dollar crude is good and bad news for environment
by Marlowe Hood
Jan 3, 2008
PARIS (AFP) - Surging oil prices are a mixed blessing for the environment, experts say. Clean renewable energy and recycling are getting a major boost from 100-dollar-a-barrel crude -- but so are coal, a massive contributor to global warming, and nuclear power, which remains shadowed by safety concerns.
Oil briefly topped 100 dollars on Wednesday, driven by escalating energy demand in China, stagnant oil supplies and unrest in oil-producing Nigeria.
Less than a year ago, a barrel of crude could be had for 50 dollars, and in November 2001 the price was as low as 16.70 dollars in New York.
What is painful for consumers, though, may have benefits for planet Earth.
To start with, triple-digit oil prices can prod users into switching to more fuel-efficient cars or public transport. They also push wind, solar power and other "alternative" energies, once marginalised as too costly or exotic, into the mainstream.
"As gas-fired electricity becomes more expensive, there are more and more places where you can build wind farms that are competitive or cheaper," said Steven Sawyer, executive director of a Brussels-based industry group, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
"At current international gas prices, there would be some place in just about every country in the world where wind would be a better economic option," he told AFP.
Preliminary figures show that in 2007, total installed wind power capacity increased from 74 gigawatts to between 92 and 93 GW, maintaining an approximately 25 percent annual increase as compared to the year before, according to GWEC.
The surge in oil prices is also causing smiles in the recycling industry, especially in plastics, which are made from oil and gas.
The higher the price of virgin materials to make plastics, the greater the incentive to recover, melt down and re-use old plastic bottles, shopping bags and other wrapping.
"Prices for plastics of all kinds have doubled in the last 10 years," says Peter Sundt, secretary general of the European Association of Plastics Recycling and Recovery Organisations (EPRO).
The long and enduring rise in oil prices in the first decade of the 21st century is particularly important. Past, sudden downturns in oil prices in the 1990s badly hit recycling, he told AFP.
Leading the charge is China, which handles around 10 million tonnes of discarded plastics a year, about five million of which is imported from Europe, the United States and other rich economies.
With oil scaling new peaks, and China becoming choosier about its garbage imports, more and more European firms are investing in hi-tech plants with low labour costs to recycle plastics for their domestic market, according to Sundt.
Yet the same economic imperatives driving the development of cleaner energy and better recycling are also driving the exploitation of other fossil fuels that are even more noxious than oil.
"High oil prices also make really nasty oil and petroleum development projects financially attractive," said Sawyer, pointing in particular to a flurry of investment in tar sands, especially in Canada.
"In terms of per unit of energy delivered, that is about the most polluting, greenhouse-gas intensive activity imaginable," he said.
Tar or oil sands are a mixture of sand, water and heavy crude that is difficult and expensive to extract. But several major oil companies, including Shell or early this month British Petroleum, have invested heavily in extraction operations that produce oil costing about 40 dollars a barrel, leaving a huge margin for profit.
An even greater environmental danger, though, is coal, which accounts for 40 percent of the electricity produced in the world, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Vienna.
Several of the world's largest economies -- including China, the United States and India -- are digging hungrily into domestic reserves of coal that are cheap and, unlike oil, have no geopolitical risk.
"In 2006, China built on average three coal-fired plants per week," says Cedric Philibert of the IEA.
Nuclear power is benefitting from both the high price of oil and worries about climate change, despite lingering fears about plant safety, storage of highly-radioactive waste and nuclear proliferation.
At present, nuclear accounts for 15 percent of world's electricity needs, according to the IEA.
China, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam have all put in place ambitious strategies to expand or introduce nuclear power, Britain, France and Finland are pushing ahead with plans for next-generation reactors while the United States has passed laws aimed at accelerating atomic plant construction.
In September, US President George W. Bush said rich countries should help developing nations obtain "secure, cost-effective and proliferation-resistant nuclear power."
"Nuclear power is the one existing source of energy that can generate massive amounts of electricity without causing any air pollution or greenhouse-gas emissions," Bush said.
